Nintendo announces price increases across the board, set to come into effect from September in western regions

After much speculation, Nintendo has finally followed their competitors in announcing price increases for their hardware.

You can find a breakdown of what's changing below:

Nintendo Switch 2
  • United States: $449.99 ➜ $499.99 (11% increase)
  • Canada: $629.99 ➜ $679.99 (7% increase)
  • Europe: €469.99 ➜ €499.99 (6% increase)
Nintendo Switch 2 Japanese-Language System
  • Japan: ¥49,980 ➜ ¥59,980 (20% increase)
Nintendo Switch OLED
  • Japan: ¥37,980 ➜ ¥47,980 (26% increase)
Nintendo Switch
  • Japan: ¥32,978 ➜ ¥43,980 (33% increase)
Nintendo Switch Lite
  • Japan: ¥21,978 ➜ ¥29,980 (36% increase)
Of note here is the fact that it's only the Switch 2 going up in price outside of Japan for the moment, with Nintendo's home turf getting hit harder both in the products that are affected and the amount they're going up. The price of Nintendo Switch Online will also be going up for Japanese users to better align with other regions, as well as the playing cards Nintendo continue to make and sell in the region.

These price changes will come into effect at different times based on both the region and the products in question. The Nintendo Switch 2 price increase for western regions is set to happen from the 1st of September, with the changes for the Japanese consoles and playing cards coming into play later this month. Japanese Nintendo Switch Online price increases will begin in July.

It should also be mentioned that this is likely not the last we've heard on the topic, with the press release mentioning price increases to follow for South Korean Nintendo Switch Online subscriptions, as well as price revisions for other regions not specifically touched on. You can find the full press release linked below.

that's exactly what it is but try convincing them blind fanboys of that
lmao it's probably already sold twice of what the wii u did  you're crazy if you think this console is gonna do poorly. even after the increase it's still the cheapest besides the series S, and you dont get any physical with the series S.

It's funny how people with a bias become completely imbecilic with their claims. Rather hard to explain how the Switch 2 is like a Wii U move when Wii U went in a completely different direction from its predecessor, while Switch 2 more or less followed the same path as Switch 1, but is stronger in a way folks wanted it to be.
IMO the name of the console is to close to its previous gen. It can causes problems :)

I'd argue slapping a number 2 on the end is about as clear as you can get that it's a successor. "U" is ambiguous. I haven't seen anybody getting confused about what the Switch 2 is so far.

I'm considering buying the Switch Lite 2 when and if Nintendo release that, it seems like a good way for them to regain some favor with a more affordable option since as with the original Lite, the cost of the Joy-Cons, dock, plastic accessories, and extra components on the motherboard to facilitate video out can all be eliminated, and furthermore it would be a great opportunity for them to have their new system available in lighter colors similar to the Switch Lites but maybe going off of a different theme. The Switch 2 as is seems like a far better deal than what Microsoft and Sony have been doing recently, but comparative value isn't always the same as overall value, and while I don't dispute that the system has been selling well, it feels like the rate of adoption would skyrocket with a Lite model so long as they would be able to decrease the price by the same ratio used with the original Switch to Switch Lite pricing.
There are a handful of games that I would be interested in playing on the Switch 2, but many of them are upcoming (Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight) or as of yet unannounced and possibly not releasing for a long time (SMM3, because SMM2 is my favorite Switch game), so I'll be playing some Game Boy games over the summer and keeping an ear to the ground for rumors of the Lite 2.

A "Switch Pro" Lite with a replaceable battery sounds great, but a shame they refuse to make Lite models with OLED screens.

This is crazy. For an older millennial like me who grew up with console prices decreasing over time, it's insane to see prices increasing instead. PS5, Xbox, Steam Deck (granted only in Asia) and now the Switch 2. Come on! And correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Nintendo getting a refund from the failed USA tariffs? Seems a bit unfair if it's the case.

The console price is ultimately irrelevant if you're waiting to get all the games for free; ultimately this specific group is unaffected.

I think Nintendo's hardware is overpriced no matter how you slice it.
You cannot convince me that this hardware is more expensive than launch PS5 that had cutting edge.

Times have changed. That is how much manufacturing costs have increased since the PS5 launch.

Go and buy another Switch 2 and another two Switch 1 before September.

Those Japanese-only systems are really cheap, I wonder if they would play games in English language? I doubt that they'll lock you into playing in Japanese, no? I wouldn't mind having a Japanese user interface and difficulties with using eShop or something. I prefer buying physical copies and as long as updates work just the same, I don't see a problem with that, especially at that price.

Many games use the system language to internally choose their language. For those titles you will be locked to Japanese. For titles that have English with no option for Japanese, or an internal language picker, English will be available.

I don’t believe you can use non Japanese accounts on it either, so your English only games will need to be physical too. Honestly just seems too much work for a non Japanese speaker.

the goddamn RAM PRICES are going up because RETARDS are using AI as "art", while sam altman keeps on needing to zip his pants up because of the cissies thinking ai is the future (source: @jondelarroz on twitter, he's an incel), like we just need to stop blaming nintendo on the console prices and start blaming ai

I'm still not gonna buy it anyway. I glad I only know one other person in irl that owns one. The price was crazy high when it released and even if their is maybe a game or two that looks cool, I don't agree with their decisions lately to support it.
