Hacking Mplayer doesn't play DVD's
These posts are a bit old but... What are you using to reinstall DVDx? Are you using Bootmii installer? If so, which version? I had the same issues trying to use Mplayer but could load backups with NeoGamma with no problems. I fixed it by downloding the newest version of Bootmii installer V0.3...- YarsRevenge

Homebrew Getting "Invalid DVD" message in FCE Ultra GX & Snes9X G
I was having very similar issues... I am almost positive that I had DVDx installed but Mplayer just wouldn't work with my DVDs. Backup loader (NeoGama) worked fine. I couldn't get Deadly Creatures NTSC-U to work with rev10 no matter what I tried (002 fix made no difference either). It works fine with rev13a though.
