    Figured it out, it only reads iso files so you need to turn your bin/cues into iso. I used OPL Manager and it was easy enough

    Hacking USB Loader GX: Black screen when loading Wii games

    Was this just a cIOS issue? My issue is similar - launching games through usbLoaderGX results in a black screen with the controller disconnecting. The wii stays on, and I even had SimAnimals launch after waiting at the black screen for about 10 minutes. Wouldn't happen again though.
