    So aside from modchips, there is no way at all to get to the firmware that checks the discs? Nothing else is linked to it?

    Hacking Wii won't power on!

    This has happened to me also, before I installed homebrew. It usually happens if there's a power failure of some sort like the others said. I just unplugged my Wii for like an hour / 30 minutes, and it worked fine after.
