    I am DLing day one update and will keep it unused from this point forth. I might play Mario Kart World offline for a while. Do we know if digital games need occasional online hand-check with Nintendo's servers or can I keep playing downloaded games without internet from here on?

    Okay to answer everyone's Qs: Yes the system was 'soft-bricked' as there was a version mismatch. But I found the relevant BOOT0/1 backups and restored it and got it working again. So everything was solved - and I was glad I had my backup files handy.
