    I am not an expert on video encoding by any means, yet to my understanding a 1920x1080 video with 4:2:0 chroma contains 960x540 color data. When you re-encode such a video to yuv420p 800x226, that color data is compressed to just 400x113 despite there being enough color data in the original file...

    I'm not sure I understand what you mean by a sharp scaler, but in my testing 960x540 (as an example) looks way better after being downsampled with bilinear filtering than it does being downsampled to 800x240. Maybe I'm just not aware of the tricks to use but generally I just feed my 3DS 540p...
