Electronics manufacturer Sharp demoed their 3D display technology for mobile phones in Tokyo earlier today, according to a report at Boston.com. The site reports that the 3D effect works on a 3-inch screen held about a foot from the viewer’s face, but that images were "less clear and even a bit blurry" when viewed from certain angles.

Mass production of these screens is set to commence in the first half of this new fiscal year. The need for 3D glasses is offset by two parallax screens that send different images to each eye. In addition to viewing 3D content, combined with a camera, the technology also allows for users to take 3D photographs.

A Japanese press release says the screen also has a touch panel, a feature the Nintendo 3DS is likely to have. Sharp’s product is FWVGA (480 x 854 pixels), 500 cd/m2 lumiance, and a contrast ratio of 1000:1.

While Sharp declined to name the companies they are supplying to, if the technology is affordable enough for widespread use, one would expect Nintendo to adopt it post-haste.

Not sure if I should of put this in the 3DS section or not but it is news so I just posted it here, feel free to move it if necessary.

This resolution is quite different from th one used in DS, I don't think these screens really are for 3ds.

Hopefully Sharp is making them a little bigger than the 3 inches stated in this article. The 3DS screen won't top the XL, but personally I'm hoping for 3.5 to 3.8 inches... it should at least be a bit bigger than the DSi's screen.

That doesn't prove a thing. The DS' screens have a different resolution to the GBA one, and that one was different from the GBC screen.

QUOTE(Zantheo @ Apr 2 2010, 07:31 PM) I can't see 3D due to a bad left eye. Wonder how it's gonna look like to me. :s
You'll see it in 2D. Really, don't worry about it. The 3DS might be less interesting to you, but you'll have no problem at all playing the games.

OH MAH GAWD!

I saw this 3D movie in the theaters and it was so totally cool. Since this movie theater screen could somehow give me a 3D experience I will now assume that the 3DS will be using this gigantic screen just because they have the same purpose!

SCIENCE!

Yes, because the camera records in 2D, as it only has one 'eye'. The 3D will appear in real life because our eyes will create the differential.

okay interesting tidbits I picked up.

One the 3D screen is INFACT a touchscreen. So are both screens going to be touch for the DS? He also noted the 3D feature can be turned on and off. And ontop of that he said, Mass Production will be started Mid year? That's like June July August time frame. Or as the article said September, Such early production perhaps leads to a belief that the 3DS might be released Q4 2010?

Just thoughts.
