Decided to install CFW on my Old 3DS XL. Stupidly I forgot to make a backup to restore to when downgrading to 2.1. I tried to update to current 11.4 after installing Luma, and got an error through the system settings. I decided to update via game cartidges, but jumping too high from 2.1 also resulted in an error. So I decided to do babystep upgrades. I used Kid Icarus uprising to get to 3.something, and after it did the reset, Luma decided it didn't like running on 3.something and I boot to a screen that says put the proper firmware.bin in the Luma folder. I found the appropriate bin, and now Luma is saying that file is either corrupted (it's probably not) or encoded and can't boot. Before I go deeper in this rabbit hole, I really need a finger in the right direction. Any idea how to boot Luma on 3.something?

What guide are you using? It can't be 3ds.guide because you don't have to downgrade for B9S, unless you're using an older version.

First off where you even using the 3ds.guide ? Because if you where you would know that downgrading isn't needed anymore for cfw thanks to b9s replacing a9lh.

If they even were. it explicitly states to make backups before downgrading
They admit it was a mistake, so I don't see a reason to not try to figure out what to do.

OP, you shouldn't have even tried to upgrade, idk if you can even fix it from 3.x

If you power down the system and hold Select, does it pull up a config menu?

Perhaps they could try to get a new clean 2.1.0 image again since they had moved off of that version. I know if they were still on it then they would not want to do that as it would brick.

But how would they inject it without an exploit? Knowing if they have Luma+A9LH will help us with that significantly, as would knowing what guide they used.

I think paliect has something or is working on something to help with people who did downgrade without a nand backup. I would need to find that post and link it if they do got info about this for the OP

You mean the 9.2.0 CTRTransfer? I have a link to it, but we need to know what OP has done with their system before we can tell him to use it, hence why I'm asking for the guide.

Follow the 3ds.guide and perform the 9.2 CTRTransfer
I legit have no idea why you would update while on 2.1, its known to brick immediately.

Did some research before I attempted. Saw it bricked for N3ds and 2DS. I inquired about O3DS XL and was told it was an exception.

An old one. Device was on 11.2. and was using an A9LH and Luma tutorial for that firmware. Probably should have gone with B9S. Too late for that now.

Was using a guide. Went with an old one for A9LH on 11.2. Probably shoulda went B9S and done that, but hindsight is 20/20, ya know?

Do you have a link to the guide you used? If you can send that to us, we should be able to figure out what you need to do. (I just wanna make sure the tutorial is a decent one/see what it told you to do)

Right! My bad! I went with this guide here

which to my understanding was based off this written guide https://3ds.guide/installing-boot9strap-(homebrew-launcher)

You were following an outdated guide - which I don't think has anything to do with the written one (the video guide is a9lh, written is b9s).

Get the 9.2 CTR transfer files, and basically follow the instructions on https://3ds.guide/9.2.0-ctrtransfer EXCEPT use the .bin file for GodMode9 not .firm.

Whoops. You're completely right the written guide was updated to B9S. I'll give this a go and say how it turned out. Thank you!

Took your advice after I got back on 11.4, Ominous and now I'm running B9S!

Success! Everything works! Wanted to say yall are AWESOME! I'm convinced I would have bricked my system if it wasn't for the guidance here. Thank you!!!

Edit: This was a headache to recover. I won't be forgetting to do a backup for a restore any time soon again :P
