NES, SNES, N64, NGC, Wii and WiiU all had those power bricks in between but the end of the power adapter was standard and would fit on any power mains.
Hold up there. The NES and SNES both had the large, brick style power adapters. I know this because I have both systems.
The N64 was the first to not have it, because the brick was integrated into the back of the system.

Oh, in Europe Nintendo went with the normal power adapter. Here's a photo of my NES power adapter:

I would also show my SNES' one but they're bubblewrapped as all hell so can't be too bothered. :P

And that's the problem, going it sideways means it can take two spots even though it's the slimmest of all.
Oh, I think we're speaking of different different European plugs then. I just saw your NES-plug above which has that UK plug.

Every European power brick with sideways sitting "sticks" that I have are those that takes up the least space on the sockets :)
