Hey guys and gals, the other night I was playing some GTA IV and the game froze for a second and then my computer blue-screened.
On attempting to turn the computer back on, it blue-screened before I could get to the Windows 7 login screen.
The information from the blue screen:
STOP: 0x00000116
nvlddmkm.sys

From there, I booted into safe mode, which was fine, and uninstalled the Nvidia drivers (The blue screen was on the same drivers I've been using for months, but to eliminate that version as a factor I installed older as well as newer versions which all cause the same bsod). After uninstallation of the drivers, I was able to use the computer normally via the generic drivers provided by Windows 7.

If any Nvidia drivers are installed (Clean installs ofcourse) then the computer will just blue screen upon boot up.
I've attached one of the minidumps from the blue screens(It's inside the archive).
The graphics card in question is the Gigabyte GTX 580
All the usual troubleshooting has been attempted short of trying another pci-e slot (As I only have the one) and trying another GPU with Nvidia drivers to determine if it's hardware or software related.

As I said, this problem appeared randomly whilst I was gaming, no software or hardware changes had been made for several days prior to this problem.

Considering how random the blue screen was, I have the strangest feeling that the card may be on its way out (I've had it for 3 and a 1/2 years) but that's just my guess at the moment.

Let me know if there's any other information you need.

Operating System
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1
CPU
Intel Core i7 2600K @ 3.40GHz
Sandy Bridge 32nm Technology
RAM
12.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard
Intel Corporation DP67BA (LGA1155)
Graphics
(Due to lack of driver installation, Speccy couldn't provide me with the details so Gigabyte GTX 580)
Hard Drives
112GB ATA Corsair Force GT SCSI Disk Device (SSD)
932GB ATA WDC WD1002FAEX-0 SCSI Disk Device (SATA)
1863GB ATA WDC WD2002FAEX-0 SCSI Disk Device (SATA)
Optical Drives
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH22NS70 SCSI CdRom Device

Download MEMTEST86 on another PC and burn it to a disc. Run it. I have a feeling RAM is your real issue here- If the test shows nothing [you will know if something is wrong, it is VERY obvious] after 1hour of FAILSAFE** scanning, post back and I will think of more solutions :). Usually you will see an issue if there is one after 20 mins, but to be safe allow for 1 hour.

Actually, do you have FireFox installed by chance? I reread your post and had a same terrible experience almost exactly how you describe- and the reason was very strange, eventually NVIDIA fixed the issue through an update.

I don't understand why it would be RAM related but I'll grab it now (Though I have it burned to a disc somewhere around here already XD)

Yeah, I reread- read my edited post. It's definitely worth doing anyway.
Yeah, it's running now, I'm doubtful that there'll be any errors though. Anyway, I do have Firefox installed but I know that can't be a compatibility issue there considering that was long ago fixed.
Besides, same browser and driver version with no issues for however long.

If you cannot borrow another GPU to try in the same PCI slot, you could try stress testing the GPU by using something like FurMark. If the card has any faults, stress testing it will very likely kill it completely. Let the GPU get nice and hot while running FurMark or whatever. If you notice any artifacts then the GPU is most likely on it's way out. Personally I would not bother stress testing it and just use it till it either dies or (in the case of a faulty PCI slot) the PCI slot fails completely.

I'll give it a stress test later tonight. The problem with using it till it dies is that I can't game at all.

Stress testing with FurMark can't be done without the drivers installed apparently. And because I can't have them installed, that's a no go.

Hi,

Same problem happened to me this morning.
Nvidia updated driver and my PC went restarting and giving me the blue screen.

I also own a gtx580.

PC works only with the default drivers.
Each time i try a new Nvidia driver, pc goes blue screen again.

Don't really think it's a hardware issue.
Gonna try more and if i manage to find something i'll let you know.

I had this same issue with GTX 460, but eventually it was solved by an update. Its weird because the update prevents previous drivers from working.

How did you uninstall Nvidia's drivers? Just with device manager in Windows?

If so, use DDU to do a complete 100% uninstall of the drivers and any software and settings associated with the drivers. I had a similar issue with AMD on some work PCs, and using this to uninstall rather than Device Manager seemed to fix the issue.
