Hi GBA,

I just wanted to report the WiiU Scene Releases have now been compressed to 4.05GB which is great news for many with slow connections. Cause lets face it, 23GB to download and keep on a Hard drive is a lot and very annoying to many. Just thought I would let everyone know the good news coming in. Here's the NFO on it all!:-

Here's a link to a 7-zipped version of Super Mario 3D World's WUD from the Wii U because the original is so fkn big that most people can't afford to download it. The original image is 23.3 GB (25,025,314,816 bytes) but this is 4.04 GB (4,349,131,023 bytes) for the 7z plus whatever else for the cover image and NFO file from the original download. Repost of the NFO:

I'm not sure it really counts as news. All one has to do to compress a WiiU game is install 7zip or similar and add the file to archive. It baffles me that this was not done in the first place.

Sorry my bad!. I thought it had not been reported on yet I didn't read the other post on the info. Yeah it can be shut in that case now. Its just I have seen it pop up on my site today so I thought no one knew about the compressed WiiU scene releases yet.

Scene rules don't allow for anything but .rar compression, if you want to use a different compression you have to open your own Scene; with black jack and hookers!
People don't always "get" the idea that the scene is supposed to provide 1:1 images for the sake of their long-term preservation, not convenience.

These images are just compressed with 7z instead of rar, both are lossless and 1:1. The only backdraw here is that it's slower to extract/package, but if it saves 19GB...

Oh, fair enough then - I only skim-read the thread and though this was something along the lines of *.cso's. Carry on! :P

Weren't users of this form doing this back in May? It is cool and all and great for archival purposes but I like having the official scene release even though its large. It is a lot easier to verify without downloading 4GB+, extracting, then verifying.

Hopefully if people are going to pirate then don't compress the fuck out of the games or it'll make parts of it look worse than it already is. In this case it's just compressed for the 7z files.

This is gonna be awesome for Mario Kart 8 'cause that Ending Credits video was already with bad quality and now it'll be even worse! You go compression!
as far as I understand its not really a compression, but just a way to get rid of the dummy data.... the game is only 4gb in size, but the disc is 25 in total.... doesnt make sense to download 19 gig of empty data

It was pretty shitty that Nintendo didn't include the Ending Credits video with very good HD quality and then the first time you've finished it you're forced to watch it till the end which is quite unpleasant, but just get a drink or somethin' and it should be done by then.

You don't understand what compression means in terms of scene uploads do you? Nothing within the game is being shrunk, no loss of quality of the game is happening (pretty sure there is no way to do this with games as it is). It's compressing away (removing) all the extra blank or dummy data that are on the disc to fill up the entirety of the disc. I don't know the size of Wii U disc, I think its like 25 GB or something like that.

But lets look at a standard dvd, its is 4.7 GB. Lets look at a game for the regular Wii, say the game itself is about 1.5 GB. An "official" release of the game will be 4.7 GB regardless, because all games for the Wii (pretty sure all systems in general actually) fill up the remainder of the unused data with dummy data, so all games on the surface appear to be the same size which incidentally is the full size of data allowed on the dvd. Now when Wii games were uploaded to the scene they were "scrubbed" or compressed where all this dummy data was removed from the download. And so instead of downloading 4.7GB of game data, you download the exact same game at only 1.5GB. Please note again, no data is actually lost within the game, nor is the quality of the gameplay affected in anyway. I hope that makes sense.

The last time I checked out a scene release of a game was back in 2009 for some PSP title, and seeing the information first shown up leads some people to believe they could've somehow compressed the game.

Still, once the "compressed to 7z files" should clarify that though.

I personally don't care about scene/pirate releases as I prefer to support developers with the games by purchasing them, unlike others.

All I did was use 7zip to compress the WUD file as a whole. Nothing was lost or gained. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/56043942/RandomPics/SM3DWCompression.png
Also, screw what the "scene" thinks, if I wanna compress the WUD at a decent compression rate so people don't have to download the full thing and use up their bandwidth, then I'm gonna :P Also, the extension doesn't matter, it's the compression algorithm that matters. LZMA2 at least TRIES to save space. Plus, once we can finally decrypt all the data and develop a format like WBFS for Wii U discs we won't even need to do this. This is just for getting your hands on a copy right now.

This compression is LOSSLESS.

I think this is a good idea to save disk space and bandwidth. If you ever need the original scene release files you can reconstitute them via SRR.

This is a great idea to compress them with WinRar or 7zip, just as long as there is no password associated to the said archive. Hate that the compressed file may have password on it and to get the password, you have to go to a so called survey site to get the password in a text file. The game itself is not modified in any way, just compressed. All you have to do is simply run WinRar or 7zip and decompress the game to a Ramdisk, and the game should be 1:1, then copy to your Wii U HDD. You can also keep the archive file on your PC Drive and no longer need the iso file on your Ramdisk, since after it has been copied to Wii U Drive.

You plebs enjoy your compressed swill. I'm gonna stick with my 23 GB uncompressed game, with no fun lost in the compression. You may not think there's a difference, but there is.
