Any way to stop it pestering me to update? I'm worried my nephew might turn on my 3DS and start the update.

Also I'm on 4.3, any benefit or reason to update to 4.5?

Go to system settings and reformat. You lose eshop games though. (until you go online to redownload them - which updates the system).

I figured, so there's no way to connect to the internet (Even in MT-Mode) without it auto-downloading the update ?

I can work around it for now, however it'd be VERY cool if someone eventually worked around this.......i'd rather not lose my ambassador games due to a reformat :/

You can always use emunand to do a 'fake update'. Problem with that is, if you start from a cold boot or exit out of system settings (and maybe other triggers) the 3ds will run off real nand and be in danger of updating again. That's always a big issue with young people so its a bad risk.

Before you do anything else (aka right now), make sure you make a nand backup just in case just such an accidental update occurs. (it will require a hard mod to restore 4.5, but we'll cross that bridge if we get to it - hopefully never)

Yeap, current "workaround" is to use emunand and never ever turn off your 3DS or let it run out of battery.

huh? You are talking about sleep mode here. Not everyone is using it, even so if you disable the spotpass it wont download anything in sleep mode.

Has anyone successfully done a hardware downgrade back to 4.5 using a backed up NAND?

Turn on parental controls. Then you'll need the pin to accept the update.

Really?

...

Yup!
I've done several times.
While I'm on 4.5, I take a hardware backup (or gateway backup, it really doesn't matter), do the HW mod.
After updating to 7.1, you only need to write YOUR OWN 4.5 backup back and you're again in 4.5.

3 days ago I did a similar service for a customer that bought a Zelda bundle console (gold one). It came with 6.X and he updated to 7.1. Later he discovered about GW and contacted me. He then bought a new one in 4.1 and I switched the boards. Then I had to update the 4.1 to 4.5, took a backup and then updated it to 7.1 to do a system transfer (old motherboard was in the new console). After that I took another 7.1 backup (with all of his content and games) and switched it back to 4.5 (using his own backup). Then I formatted the SD for emuNAND and injected the 7.1 backup in the SD.

So right now he has a gold zelda bundle with 4.5 and emuNAND in 7.1 containing his own purchased games and stuff...

so, bottom line is, as long as you using your OWN backups you can come and go from/to whatever version you like.

Cheers!

What's the process? Is there a video of anyone doing the downgrade?

I guess it does... I guess someone posted on youtube, but it's reaaaaly simple.
If you know how to do the NAND hardware mod then you're 95% down the road for "downgrading" to you'r own NAND.

Just do as I said: Do the NAND HW mod, backup your 4.5 NAND and you can use it anytime you need.

Remember, there's NO WAY to actually downgrade your 3DS if you DON'T HAVE a 4.5 backup of YOUR OWN 3DS.

Cheers
