I got my 3DS on christmas and am holding off on registering it because I feel I can use the warrenty is comes with any time. Is this true? Or should I use it now? I don't see a experation date.

I dont have a warrenty though, I didn't pay for one.
Warranty lasts the duration of one year (unless it got changed...) starting the date of purchase. Nintendo was (don't know if they still are) giving an extra month if you register the 3DS on Club Nintendo.

Go ahead and register it.

Warranty is free, unless you bought the console pre-owned or something.
From the day you purchased the 3DS until one year later, it is under warranty.
Registering the 3DS extends this one year warranty to 13 months.

After the 12/13 month period has expired, the 3DS is out of warranty and nothing can extend it.

It was from an online store though, that count? My mom didn't buy the warrenty

Yes, that is fine.
Keep the invoice/proof of purchase from when you purchased it and everything will be alright.

If you have any doubts, call Nintendo.

Was it bought new or was it bought used?

On new consoles, the warranty is provided with the purchase and ownership of the console through Nintendo for one year (12 months starting from date of purchase).

On used consoles, the store from which the console is purchased usually will include their own warranty, typically a 30 day, 90 day, or 6 month warranty, starting from the date of purchase, which is through the store itself.

In both cases you can almost always purchase an extended warranty from the store through a third party company that they contract out through and is an Authorized Repair Facility for the manufacturer in question.

I bought an ambassador 3DS and I got 90 day of warranty after registering it on Club Nintendo's site.
