The most recent article on Wololo claims that liquid metal cooling the console leaks/gets out of place and damages the console. It cites some YouTubers that have repair shops as sources.

I'm very sceptical about this. After all this time and only now to hear complains and fr a couple of low key sources.

Has anyone here had their console fail due to leaked or moved liquid metal? Is there a significative failure rate?

Would be interesting to hear reports from an insurance/extended warranty company.

I know someone who has theirs vertical, not even using the stand, haven't heard anything.

Makes sense that gravity would affect Liquid Metal, but I’ve had mine upright since launch and no issues whereas I have had a friend go through 2 consoles (about to get a third) after countless GPU/CPU issues.

Luck of the draw I bet.
If you think about it, nearly every single desktop CPU is kept in a vertical position for its whole life so this would be a widespread issue in the PC community for those using LM. I think it's more likely to be incorrect re-application by users rather than a factory problem.

same for me. I've had mine vertical w/ stand. I've had no issues. I think it's mostly meant to be vertical due to the shear size of the system.

I think early consoles just had some poor parts due to the chip shortages

I’ve also had a buddy lose 3 consoles(but all repaired)

Because one of the flash chips (prob not the proper name) can get blanked out during updates causing the console to not boot and just beep

You have to desolder it and use a hardware programmer to fix it

If this were true the liquid metal would be just as likely to 'shift' whatever orientation the console was in.
With these “accusations” coming from repair shops

I have a feeling that this is likely a non issue and more of an excuse for their own shoddy work and not putting everything back together properly

My kids PS5 has been vertical for over 2 years now and no issues. It also gets transported between my place and their mothers place every 2 weeks so it sounds like inaccurate information to me. If it was going to happen, I think it would have happened by now. One would have to be incredibly rough on the console for the liquid metal to shift in my opinion.

Yeah, but could be an issue of the cooler not having sufficient pressure on the ship to keep it in place.

How so horizontally?

Work at a repair shop, this is actually correct, but fairly rare. We've seen it mostly with consoles that are moved around a lot after being played for a bit (room to room, other places etc), the warm liquid metal seeps through the little barrier and can get under the APU and will kill your console. Some people it's happened to have claimed they never move it, so could happen when just stationary, but it'll vary.

The first two PS5 revs actually have a lot of design flaws, the worst being SSD controller and RAM both have a tendency to fail due to excessive heat as well. The 3rd mobo revision is much smaller, and may fix some issues but it hasn't been out long enough to say.

A big difference between people applying their own liquid metal to their CPU and cooler and Sony with the PS5 is that Sony uses a lot more LM than any sane person would use for their CPU. This is both why the little barrier exists in the PS5 and why with a PC you'll want to use as little as possible so there isn't enough to drip out.
I wouldn't be surprised if the main reason is that the little gate around the CPU isn't always making a perfect seal, and very, very slowly metal can get through if you're unlucky. Might also be more or less likely to happen depending on various temperatures and if the tolerances at some point are just enough to allow for very fine gaps to form at specific temperature points.

Sounds reasonable. Every mass produced product will have some sort of failures, and you will see common ones. It’s weird how people turn that into all ps5s will fail this way…

My old ps4 used to eject discs, got it fixed. Some other people had the issue too, but it wasn’t something guaranteed to happen to everyone … I don’t think people get the context of 30 million consoles sold.

The article states that people are damaging their ps5's by placing it vertically. It is not saying you could damage your ps5 by placing it vertically. It's a possibility that it could happen, not that it will happen which the article insinuates. Of course anything is possible. One could get hit by a car crossing the road but does that stop people from crossing the road or mean it will happen. I was just pointing out that if it was likely to happen, given how my kids console is 2 years old, has stood vertically since it was turned on in 2020 and gets packed up every two weeks and transported 150km from their mothers place to mine then back again, that if it was going to happen it likely would have by now if it was a wide spread issue.
