Three faulty DS-Lite

I got three little DS-Lite in pretty bad condition. They were sold as defective so I didn't pay much and didn't expect much.

Sometimes people surprise me though (in a bad way). I would feel ashamed when sending someone three consoles that dirty. Yes, they were described as defective… but not as disgusting! That feeling when you open a package and wish you had some kind of NBC suit is just awful. Not to mention the consoles came in a shoe box far too large for them without any padding. *Facepalm* Lucky for me DHL was very careful with the package and there is no further damage.

They looked so depressing. Scratched, covered in dirt, only one came with a stylus and the thing that goes in SLOT-2 (UGS-005) when no GBA game is inserted.

This is what I got:

No 1. White:
  • Turns on normally
  • Charges
  • All buttons working
  • Plays DS and GBA carts.
  • Touchscreen okay.
  • Broken hinge
  • Lower LCD damaged. Usable but has lost a few lines.
No 2. Grey/Silver:
  • Shell is okay (other than dirt and bad scratches)
  • Does not turn on.
  • Does not even charge (light turns on for about one or two seconds, then off)
    • F1 is okay
    • F2 seems blown
No 3. Black:
  • Shell is okay (other than dirt, scratches and ugly stickers)
  • Turns on normally if opened no more than 25°
  • LCDs seem to be good (hard to see)
  • Charges
  • Hard shutoff when opening the shell normally → I guess the upper screen ribbon cable is busted
What I did so far is swapping the motherboard from the grey/silver with the one from the black console. This means the grey/silver one is an almost fully working unit now. Yeah! The (L)-button is a little unresponsive. Other than that it's technically perfect (and clean now).

Next goal is a shell swap between the white and the black console (keeping the lower LCD from the black one). Ouch! I don't feel comfortable messing around with DS-Lite hardware. It's the first time I do this. Done!

Thanks for reading.

@alexander1970 No, there are no "before" photos. This disgusting brown goop that was in every small gap did not deserve to be preserved with a camera.

*Barf!!*

But I've attached a picture of the (now) working console.

I was always angry at the fact that there is no Dutch language on the console.
Even then, Dutch on first party games is a rarity on the DS.

I have years of experience with these, so I'll share with you some usefull advices:

-Get proper tools for this (screwdrivers, twizers, etc...) , there are cellphone reparation toolkits for cheap on any online store.

-F2 fuses are dirty cheap so instead of bridging them (as many do), replace them, otherwise any mistake could fry the motherboard. You need soldering skills for this tho...

-Kapton tape is a MUST (sold on ebay or any electronics store), there will be times when you have to hold some ribon cables in place or the wifi anthena while using both of your hands, and this comes in handy.

-The upper screen detachement will be HARD the first time, until you get used to it so I would recomend to coil the flex cables and keep them ion place with capton tape before you get these out of the housing shell, trying to force them will mess them even more and is dangerous.

-NEVER force the ziff connectors to remove them, always remove their security clamp carefully.

-NEVER touch the two "screws" under the battery cover on the back of the motherboard (located above the battery), or you will end with messy and flickery image outpup in the displays, and these are easy to break too.

And, for begginers like you, try to follow a step by step guide, iFixit has good examples, but it tends to skip some important steps and advices, so read the comments from the users below in each step to have some feedback.

EDIT: It seems you got a working one, congratulations! :D

@Trash_Bandatcoot True. Not very fair. Most games don't even have manual language selection forcing the user to change the system language altogether. The only thing I remember with Dutch language was the preinstalled "Brain age" version on DSi XL.
Even tijd voor… Brain Training
Woorden en beelden
as a separate title (in addition to the multi-language version).

@Dartz150
Tools → Check.
F2 fuse → Maybe later. Two working motherboards and some defective parts means no use for the broken mobo at the moment. Soldering such tiny points is beyond my skills. (I installed a XenoGC successfully and that was really HARD for me).
Tape → Check.
Upper screen → I just removed the one screen that is already broken. &§$"/( This part really sucks!
Ziff connectors → The DS-Lite has a surprisingly low number. Those flimsy connectors drove me insane when replacing the upper screen on an O3DSXL. Not good for my shaking hands. But with patience it should work.
"Screws" → I never intended to mess around with VR1 and VR2 but thanks for the warning.

Thanks for all the advises!

@IncredulousP Horrible. I can't keep up with that amount of bugs; but I found a single very tiny dead spider inside one of the DS – in addition to all that brown goop.

@LeonPro12 "eBay Kleinanzeigen". A friend helped me – don't have an account.
======================

The second DS-Lite is working now (new photo attached). I got really lucky with this bunch of defective consoles: Each important part was present exactly twice. Means: Two good shells, two good motherboards, two good upper screens and two good lower screens.

What remains usable for the future are some smaller parts: WiFi/firmware chip, microphone, speakers, digitizer/touch panel, conductive rubber pads and some shell parts.

Upper screen assembly was hellish, but I had help and we did it!

Yeah!
