Stackoverflow, Snobs and Elitism

Hadn't actually planned to write this,
but it seems I'm not the only one with that view.

Technically speaking stackoverflow and similar platforms are great for getting answers or helping others,
however their sometimes snob attitude and even bickering in the comments/reply section makes it hard to get the help or suggestions needed.

Especially the newcomers might have trouble phrasing their intent correctly.

Code gets picked apart without meaningful insights to take home.

A real shame, when the original mission is "help"...

Even forums suchas the imagemagick forum are way warmer in that regard.
There people get help if they provide as much as a rough idea.

So all in all: Each to their own devices when it comes to coding ?
Yeah, just answer your questions yourself. Cool.

Furthermore "blocking people from answering" - cause some (once again) self obsessed snobs thought your answer wasn't to their taste is pure hysteria.

And don't even expect an answer...
Sometimes your question will remain without answer..
Or.. Could it be ?
Are the snobs emselves too afraid of taking a leap of faith inquiring further in fear of *gasp* getting downvoted emselves ?

Personally I think it is never to late to get into a hobby, learn a skill.
Wanna make a website ? Just do it, there are WYSIWYG editors that give you building blocks you can then pick apart.
Wanna code an app, but think you're too old? No dice. Just. do . it.

I will try to compare this to the situation on GBAtemp. To be clear: Overall this forum is very good! The following lines look way too negative and don't represent GBAtemp as a whole – but it is worth noting some room for improvement.

We have analogue things here as well. Flat answers, one-liners and replies not helping at all. "How to do X?" → "Do Y instead." → "I don't want Y because […]. How do I do X" → "Lol. Y is better."
The prime example for this is asking for help for a 3DS mode flashcart. So many useless and intolerant answers that simply do not help – combined with calling the OP of a thread stupid in a roundabout way.

Just answer your question yourself
Rather than getting no answer at all… there is another possibility: Instead of staying friendly and trying to find out what is happening… why not just borderlining an insult and use Google as a verb (and reducing search engines to just one provider)? I've seen that here as well and I don't like it.
The least creative approach in this regard is lmgtfy. Somebody asks for help… and gets their own question thrown into a search engine. Strictly speaking many things can be found online – when knowing the answer or at least the correct search terms. As good for your personal education research may be, it can be hard, tedious and useless… and come near re-inventing the wheel: If you know the answer to a question it is faster and easier for a help seeking person to simply give the answer than pointing to the market leader in search engines.

I have to say I was often near of asking noob questions here on GBAtemp about topics I don't know well (like Android) after searching a lot and not being able to achieve my goal. I'm sure somebody could have easily answered them. Fearing lmgtfy or a link to xda-developers, I refrained from doing so. From my >2500 posts… I guess less than 10 are questions for my own affairs.

Downvoting, blocking, ignoring…
My stance on this can be summarized in a tiny picture: :shit:
Preventing any discussion, suppressing any deviating opinions; it is so easy, convenient and widely used on the internet. In the case of stackoverflow: If you already have to be an expert to be allowed to participate on something, there can't be any new beginners.
==================

The best thing to counter this is staying friendly yourself. Trying to help when you can and maybe even telling people to stop using lmgtfy. If one has no intention to help and cannot post in a constructive manner, they should not post at all.

If a site like stackoverflow is so snob/elite that they don't want anybody new… well better not frequent it.
