I lost half of my lifetime things

Just found out that 1 of the 2 storage units my parents rented didn't get paid for way earlier in the year. This one had most of my childhood electronics, consoles, games. It had some mementos, and I'm sure plenty other things I'll slowly realize I lost years down the line. Gameboy/Color games, GBA, couple n64 consoles, controllers, and games.

It also contained quite a few family heirlooms.

They never told me, either, until I asked them multiple times, and finally received an answer today.

RIP things. I hope the vulture fuck that you got auctioned to respects them enough to preserve and make good use of them.

Oh, I almost forgot to mention: the second storage unit was days from being auctioned, and this one has $1000's of my electronics and personal files, drives, paperwork, medical histories, cards, pretty much the most important things. I had to shell out almost $400 a few days ago and now I have to keep making that payment every month. Ain't having irresponsible parents great?

Personally I avoid storage units like the plague, or if I have to deal with them then take advantage of the deal they might offer and have a definitive plan on what to do with the stuff held there. As said deals are for about 3 months then anything more is a false economy.

That said between sheds, moving well, and being good at stacking things I have not had need for one myself. Had to pull a few friends back though.

It's my own opinion, but if someone has to rent a storage unit to keep his stuff safe, unless he is a professional collector (that means making a living out of his collection), he should consider moving to a bigger place, or he should consider starting to sell stuff that he doesn't use anymore. You know you can't take'em with you when you die.

Sorry to hear that...
some people just don't have any decency, I would at the very least ask before I just sold all that stuff and kept the money.
smh

Unfortunately I was jobless, straight out of college. Trust me, I was job hunting, but I wasn't getting more than shitty short-contract gigs here and there. I finally landed a decent one, but by then it was too late. I was so close to leaving the hellish landscape that was living with my parents' "help".

A storage unit was the only option, my shitty parents lost their jobs and were too lazy to find new ones, so we were getting evicted. It was either throw everything we owned out, or rent a storage unit and throw it in there while they figure out how the hell they were going to make money. Spoiler alert, they didn't. They have always been a detriment to my life, and while I'm glad to finally no longer be dependent on them, I haven't moved out 100%. This storage unit is the last thing binding me to them, and unfortunately it's on the opposite side of the country to where I am working.

What is your dream job?? If you don't mind me asking.

Well, before they were crushed, I wanted to make music and video games. Now I'm a lowly test engineer for an Indian company that doesn't give 2 shits about its US employees.

You don't have to, of course but I'd love to share some music related things with you. I'm also a little bit of a 2d and 3d artist so theres that too.
I don't know squat about what you've had to deal with, but I think the best thing would be to do something you're ok with, that'll pay the bills and give you some free time. Have you heard about the "tiny home" movement? You could maybe go that route.
I of course am not a professional, but it sounds like you need a life vacation ;)

Ain't relying on other people to save your ass great?

You're a grown man. You are responsible for your own life.

Millennial, thy name is OP.

I understand not being able to pay for the storage unit and the fact that shit happens, but the parents could have let him into the unit to grab some stuff if not all before the payment was due imo.
Does suck though Mementos are memories in a way, I'm sure you'll be able make more though
