Rusty PS4!

The white PS4 I bought turned out to be a lemon with BLOD. I was able to get it working using the chassis of another PS4, and by using extra washers under the APU heatsink mounts to squeeze the APU tighter against the motherboard.

My note to the seller: View attachment 161732 View attachment 161733 View attachment 161734

Hi, I received the PS4 today nice and fast thank you. I wasn't expecting a lot from a 'semi-working' PS4, and I was slightly surprised after plugging it in when it didn't turn on. Having serviced and fixed many consoles before, I have opened the console and you clearly have (or have had) an extreme humidity issue where this PS4 has been operated. This has caused the insides of the PS4 to rust and corrode with this humidity condensing on the internal metal components, particularly the chassis. I am not seeking anything further from you, but thought you maybe interested to see the hidden damage of running electronics in such a high humidity situation. Evaporative cooling should always be properly vented, conventional air conditioning dries the air and is best. I wish you and your electronics a long and prosperous life! :)

Run into a similarly nasty situation before, bought a working used ps4, the seller neglected to tell that a smell came from it while in operation. After opening it the entire heatsink and psu were covered in some sort of sticky drink spill. Eventually cleared it with acetone, somehow it all completely dodged the mobo though, still works :)

Hi Tanja, note that I did not use the old chassis. I attempted a rust-eating solution on the chassis, which stripped ALL the shiny metal dip off it. it created a nasty tarnished metal which I did not use as I had a dead PS4 to use for parts. If I had no other parts, and I had to do the chassis again, I'd probably use a wire brush attachment for an electric drill on the less tricky areas, being particularly careful of the thin grounding points which snap off easily. The peripheral copper track around the outside was lightly rubbed back with steel wool till it was shiny again. Individual components I lightly brushed with a toothbrush and isopropyl alcohol. There's so much that can go wrong with stray bits of steel wool, and potential lifting of surface mount components.
Good Luck...

Hi bananapi761, good job on the repair. It's true that you can rarely be confident in what you buy second hand!

I just played little of "Still Wakes The Deep" , just came to gamepass today, its alright, kinda creepy. I'm not usually a horror game fan, but it looks really good graphic wise, esp w 4k. I admit it made me jump a few times.
