So I tried to use my $40 GameStop gift card today

I got this card for my birthday a few months ago, and I was looking around the store trying to find something I wanted.
Then I find Metroid Prime 3 and Metroid: Other M for 5 bucks and 10 bucks, respectively, in the pre-owned section, and then the DLC pack for BotW, and I go to checkout, give my gift card (which had never been used) to the guy at the cashier, and he tells me I have no funds on it.

Now, at this point, I'm confused bc I never used it, so he tells me to call customer service for transaction history. I do, then give the person the card info, and turns out, my card was used to buy a 40 DOLLAR NIKE E-GIFT CARD.

Great.

(They are investigating it though, so I might get it back, but I'm still mad)

I thought it was against GameStops rules to use a gamestop card to buy other gift cards

I think the only thing it says is that you can't use coupons to buy discounts, but nothing about buying gift cards with a gift card

Most of the gift card systems are easily hacked. They try random codes until they find one that works then use the money for whatever. Either it never got activated or your code randomly came up.
Oh, I guess it was actually used. That sucks. They talked about it not that long ago on the Security Now podcast.

I got an email from gamestop today and they sent me an e-card for the 40 bucks so lesson is people help you

i have a better lesson: don't fucking trust gift cards in a long term.
i am surprised they not have a tiny print about "valid for only x months"
gift cards are great but they can't be trusted... the company has their controll...

@migles yeah, that's why I'm gonna go get those games today and not have a balance on the card left in case this happens again.

you are really lucky that they are giving you it back...
they could come with bullshit and claim you did spend that card.. or how it's your fault to keep it protected and shit..

F
I heard that some Gamestop employes secretly activate and use some giftcards.
As dumb as it sounds, you could be a victim of it.
Or probably some code guesser got your code and used it.

@Felek666 that's what I thought it was at first, but the card was used like two months after I got it so it was probably a code guesser, which sucks even more because of the odds of actually guessing it
