Why I stopped waiting and updated my 3DS

First of all, I nabbed a 4.4 3DS XL during the holidays. I immediately went to see if there were any flashcarts available. Long story short, found out about gateway but didnt want to pay $80 for it so I never bought it. Fast forward to the revelations of the Gateway Brick incidents (which everyone here fervently denied) I decided to stay away from Gateway and watch the MT card. Nothing developed and I was tired of having my 3DS but not being able to play anything. It was when Nintendo offered the Four Swords promotion that was the tipping point in getting me to update. I didn't want to be some slave to an unknown overseas company. So after updating, I decided it was just not worth it to wait. Nintendo has covered their bases so far and I commend them on that. I usually like to mod or get a flashcart to avoid paying for games. Now that I've updated, I've gotten to enjoy plenty of eshop titles (all bought during price drops) and whatever 3DS game I get, its either used or below $20. And it feels great. This is just an anecdote to those still waiting like I was. Updating and being able to enjoy your 3DS at 100% isn't a bad thing, being held hostage at the expense of an unknown overseas company with shady business practices is.

well enough techincal knowledge to have already backed up my NAND.bin, , but probably not enough to be bothered getting a rasberry PI if i brick , but i can always pay someone else in the extremely unlikely event of a brick , since i am using 2.0 b1 and since bricks are like less than what? 10% of users? to overstate it , brick risk for 2.0b1 beta is probably like 0.1% if that

Lets just breakdown your logic and lets do the math. Also how many games are on the 3DS right now that are even worth playing for me only 3 or 4.

Your option: 3DS XL = $145 and. $80 for a device that has a chance to render your device useless. You can currently only play one game at a time. So you have $225 invested. You might brick your console and have to pay what $50 to fix it? Risk having someone solder and damage your motherboard?

My option: I am not playing fair I bought a used 3DS XL Zelda for $100 off of craigslist. I bought A used copy of Bravery Default for $30, New $20 Project X Zone, Zelda was free,. My total investment is $150. I have no risk of bricking my console AND I can resell everything for the same price I paid.

You = $245 with risk involved with limited gaming options. The gateway may stop working and a waist of $80.

Me = $150 and I can buy and resell. With no risk at all.

While I admire your narrow mindedness. The point is there is no right or wrong. But there are plenty of other ways to play the games you want and not risk the safety of your console.

Like using an older firmware version?

Look, you can do whatever you want with your 3DS, just don't spread misinformation around.

And by the way, it's very narrow minded to assume the prices that others paid for their 3DS. I paid $145 for my 3DS XL (new) and it came with a free game that I haven't gotten around to selling. Nice job on getting such a good deal on your Zelda 3DS XL, not sure what's wrong with the guy who sold it to you though.

It's k guys, he's a reformed pirate. He used to not like to pay for his games, but he saw the light when an evil overseas company held his DS hostage by threatening to brick it.

WOW good post. I see you don't have any reading for comprehension skills. I think he clearly says he does not like paying for games. He also said he did not want to risk the safety of his console.

He made a choice to find a better way to solve his problem. He is smart.

You are a troll.

What is the miss information I am spreading? I apologize for my assumption.

I will rework my numbers with your updated information:

Your investment = $225 with risking bricking your console and can only play one game at a time. There is a very good possibility you will have to update at some point and your $80 will be wasted. GG man. You are the best!

Me = $150 and I can buy and resell.

Please keep posting. I mean troll on man. You add so much to the topic it is unreal.

Chiodo you just admitted that your own example isn't fair yet still tried to pass that off as a somehow even comparison? Based on your own logic anyone can get a 2nd hand XL for <$100, then get a ~$60 gateway off taobao. And he's the one that is "narrow minded' when out of the entire game catalogue you only care to try 3-4 games and automatically assume that everyone will have the same gaming tastes as you?

The OP can do whatever he likes, it's his 3DS so good for him. It is kinda hilarious though with his avatar and signature images that he is still trying to take the high road and pretending to be an objective opinion for those on the fence while labelling anyone that called out his hyperbolic comments (bricks left and right, taken hostage by foreign company) as gateway investors.

I snapped as well and updated my 3DS XL from 6.0 to 7.0.1 or whatever the newest patch is. I figured gateway team will never be able to make their cards run on 6.x if they have not done so in 6+ month.

Your option: 3DS XL = $200 (new). $80 for a device that has a chance to render your device useless. You can currently only play one game at a time. So you have $280 invested. You might brick your console and have to pay what $50 to fix it? Risk having someone solder and damage your motherboard?

well it is true that there are not many games worth playing ,but i got my 3ds XL on black friday for 150$ , the NAND flash solder job is only 4 wires, not that difficult at all ,and the risk of a brick using 2.0b1 is next to nil
also GW should have multirom soon, and the scene is still in its infancy , we could see all kinds of emulators and cool homebrew, and the 3DS scene could wind up being like the PS3 scene ,but even harder to find low FW consoles if a new exploit is never found
so my 3Ds will only appreciate in value if a new exploi is not found , i paid 150$ and i could at least sell it for 200$ if not more cause of the 4.4 FW
$80 or GW , which i will recoup some of the money for once GW releases 2.0 final and i can back up the sav files on the few retail carts i have and resell them , i alreay have a dsteo also so i could sell the blue card as well ,that brings the cost of the GW card to about 40$ if not less

I updated my numbers with his quoted price. I never said his road was the wrong road. I said it's not the only road. I am open minded. For some the gateway is fine. For others its not. I will sell my copies and by other used copies for about the same price as my interest grow.

Is evaluating someones claims and considering the risk and choosing a different path narrow minded? Then I am.. It would seem he thinks the OP and my choices are inconceivable. I guess that is not narrow minded. I will need to look that up.

The OP point was he did not think the current flashcard options are good. I agree. Gateway is an unknown entity with no proven track record. Some early adopters have suffered, as with any new tech.

This would be a better first post. This seem to be a good option for you. You have considered the risk and they are acceptable for you. Do you do understand that this might not be acceptable for others?

Also, I was quoting this post. Where you seem to think it is inconcevenable that someone would update there 3DS? The quote is below.

weatMod,">Implying
>GATEWAY SHILL DETECTED say hello to that bricked wall for me

Seriously though, awesome post you've got there.

been using GW 2.0b1 with no problems
nobody in their right mind would update just for 4 swords, which i already have and got for free ages ago after my ambassador games, and which is totally not worth updating for"

Maybe this could have been posted better with more information and less insults.

It would seem Gateway suites your needs. As you can understand for others it might not.

I keep my 3DS XL legit. There are only a few games that I play (<10) and so far I have just bought them for about 20% less than MSRP and then resell them after I finish for a couple dollars less and sometimes even a couple dollars more. Although, I am keeping Mario Kart (came with XL) and Fire Emblem as those games are amazing. I do have a working DS flashcard though.

However, in the US, games are cheap and easy to come by. I might of considered other options if I lived elsewhere.

Nice little statement, but the fact is that not updating beyond 4.5 is not about a single company but so far the only viable exploit we have. So noone ever knows if some other exploit will show up within time, so even if some other company takes over where Gateway left off, this exploit will be part of the game.

Also, the price for a Gateway dropped to 60$ in the meantime (I ordered from eachgame, got it within 3 weeks)

No one with a gateway is being held hostage. Everything you have done with your updated 3ds I have done with my gateway, so I'm not seeing the point here

Seriously? Criticism a user for going legit? I updated my XL too for one game. I give a f***ing shit on any of these piracy companys. Not even because they f**k around everyone with malicious code and stupid high prices for 2 devices, which cost 3$ to produce them.

"I'm a pirate and feel good because a shady company f***s me up!"

That are my 2 cents and i don't answer to the shitstorm, which will come now.

Totally agree. Btw, I just got my 3DS few weeks ago, so I hope I didn't make the wrong choice. (I'm still loving and exploring it!)

Stop replying to this noob's post! He decided to get a hacking tool, and is complaining that the company had shady business. It doesn't, he knew what he was getting into.

@lonesome_Killer What? I didn't buy sh*t except for games. Is reading comprehension that poor? I find it ironic now that GW has run away with everyones money.
