As for what makes XOPAD it so special? The electronics and firmware on the XOPAD are completely open source (You will be able to download all the design files and source code to change whatever you don't like).
Or you could buy an atmel based avr for around $10, use current open source code to connect a retro joypad (snes/nes/genesis etc.) via USB...
Don't get me wrong, it's a great idea, but imho it doesn't look very good and makes the whole idea a bit less portable.
