I have been trying to install wads for Rock Band customs on Wii mode of my Wii U. I've followed a few sets of guides and finally was doing my first install/test yesterday only to find that suddenly my Wii U will no longer read Wii discs and it just goes to a black screen. It will still properly read Wii U discs in Wii U mode.

I read this Reddit post:
and it seemed like it was describing the issue. I went to reinstall cIOS for slots 249 and 250 and although 250 works, 249 doesn't. It won't let me override ios slot 249 at all. I don't have the exact error code from d2x handy but it was along the lines of "TMD Version wrong 6xxx != 6yyy."

Regardless of the ios issue, my real question is: how can I get my WiiU to read Wii discs again?

I am honestly not interested in using a USB loader, but if there's no other possible fix I'll consider it.

Well. I would not use any wii guides on a wii u.

So if I were to reinstall anything I would use a vwii (specific for wii u) guide below for reinstalling.

https://gbatemp.net/threads/the-definitive-vwii-hacking-guide.425852/

There is a possibility it is not software related. The drive could of just gone bad. I believe there are multiple lasers in the disc drive. So you could just have the wii laser go bad and the wii u laser still good.

This would still mean replacing the the disc drive. The board in the disc drive is tied to the wii u mainboard. so if you get a replacement disc drive. The board will still need to be swapped between the original disc drive and the replacement disc drive.

I have not done this before. Not sure the best way to troubleshoot it either. Just some thoughts that hopefully help some.

cIOS wouldn't be affecting loading disc games from disc channel, it's only used in USB loaders or on (Wii) systems with Priiloader installed and set to force IOS249 (Wii U doesn't support Priiloader at all)
(Re)installing cIOS on a Wii U is a slightly different process than on a Wii. You need a different set of files. So following a guide for Wii wouldn't work. Certain things that would be safe to do on a Wii will actually brick the vWii on a Wii U, so be very careful what steps you follow, don't just follow random things you find.

Hello,

given your syscheck report, you are missing the cios 249

I advise you to reinstall your cios 249 correctly, as below, by following this guide (as @SonicMC and @The Real Jdbye pointed out) ==>https://gbatemp.net/threads/the-definitive-vwii-hacking-guide.425852/#14

Procedure for IOS56:
- at "Select cIOS" press right and select "d2x-v10-beta52-vWii" or "d2xv10-beta53-alt-vWii" (not recommended)
- at "Select cIOS base" select "56"
- at "Select cIOS slot" select "249"
press A to install → cIOS 249 installed.

Repeat the above procedure for IOS57:
- at "Select cIOS" press right and select "d2x-v10-beta52-vWii" or "d2xv10-beta53-alt-vWii" (not recommended)
- at "Select cIOS base" select "57"
- at "Select cIOS slot" select "250"
press A to install → cIOS 250 installed.

Repeat the above procedure for IOS58:
- at "Select cIOS" press right and select "d2x-v10-beta52-vWii" or "d2xv10-beta53-alt-vWii" (not recommended)
- at "Select cIOS base" select "58"
- at "Select cIOS slot" select "251"
press A to install → cIOS 251 installed.

then test your wii game discs again.

Thanks for the responses so far. I'm fairly new to this but I have been mindful of the differences between Wii and vWii - at least I think I have!

Wii discs were working before the Homebrew channel was installed, on Tuesday, and no longer working Wednesday night. I can't exactly verify, but I don't believe it's the laser.

- at "Select cIOS slot" select "249"
press A to install → cIOS 249 installed.
As I had said, this consistently fails, with the error:
"TMD Version wrong 5662 != 5918."

(EDIT: Just corrected those numbers in the error message.)

could be wrong, but are you missing the ios for bc? I thought it was either ios8 or 10.
Post automatically merged:

nm, it doesn't show that in the syscheck.

Looking more closely at the sysCheck, it looks like you've replaced your vWii IOS37 and IOS56 with Wii ones, probably as a result of following random instructions which were not intended or compatible with the Wii U. Any games using IOS37 or IOS56 won't work, because Wii IOS are not compatible with vWii.
Thanks for the detailed instructions! I've got ios 56 (v5918) as a wad and I'll try this, probably tonight.
You need to also restore your IOS37. Older (disc) games use it, and any of them won't work if you don't do that.

recover ios 56 (v5918) with Nus downloader here ==>https://gbatemp.net/threads/nus-downloader-and-vwii-titles.462144/#post-9071384

then install it with a wads installer (yet another , wimod lite or others )
Okay. Got issues, same error in YAMM and Wii Mod Lite.
>> Installing content #00...Error: (-1022) Content did not match
TMD.
Try with AHBPROT mode or an IOS with the correct permissions.

I got it from the NUS downloader and I'm pretty sure I did that part correctly.
Any ideas for this issue?

Noted, thanks. Although I suppose I may wait for an answer about the -1022 problem before proceeding further especially since I'd hate to make further mistakes.

I probably oughtn't link to the original instructions just in case but this really wasn't a scattershot approach and I don't feel like I've been making assumptions; I honestly don't know how this could've gone so off-the-rails so quickly. But thanks for the guidance.

Try this
https://github.com/FIX94/Some-YAWMM-Mod/releases/tag/v1.0
I remember when the Wii U was first released there were issues installing IOSes requiring patches to WAD managers to support vWii, and I don't know which versions of which WAD managers got updated with these patches, but I know that one has them.

The official YAWMM seems to not have been updated since 2010, which was before the Wii U was released so it wouldn't have the patches.

I think later versions of HBC are supposed to have those patches built in so they aren't needed in the WAD manager anymore, but I don't remember for sure. It's been a while. But I seem to recall that error code being the very same that you would get back in the day if you didn't use a WAD manager with the needed patches.

Okay, I used this version of YAWMM to try to install a wad of IOS 37 and 56.
Unfortunately, got the same error -1022.

Exact reading:
>> Installing content #00... ERROR! (ret = -1022)

Should be no changes to the syscheck as of now as no install has succeeded.
At the beginning I was saying I had been careful about installing IOSes and didn't know how I could have unusual Wii ones. A note is that in like 2016 I did a data transfer from a Wii to this WiiU, so I don't know if that could affect which IOSes are present.

Is there any possibility that I've got an old version of HBC, and could that affect things?

EDIT: Just in case, and I'm not sure if patches get pulled or what, HBC says 1.1.2 IOS58 v25.32.

EDIT again like 90 seconds later: This link is tempting https://wiiu.hacks.guide/#/recover-vwii-ioses-channels - but I'll wait to hear from y'all.

Okay, so I finally found the time to come back to this. I hadn't even done any of the homebrew installation of any kind outside of vWii so there was a bit of a process, but it worked, and as best I can tell I successfully decaffienated.

However, the Wii U is still not reading Wii discs - not tested exhaustively, I'll admit, but it won't read Rock Band 2.

Here's an updated syscheck:

EDIT: Wait. Maybe I see it. It completely removed IOS37 and IOS56 instead of reinstalling them. Am I correct that this is likely the problem?
What's the best way to reinstall these?

EDIT 2: I just tried installing these IOSes from the wads I procured much earlier in this process, as described below, and this error message was still there, identical.

Suppose I try installing from Wii Mod Lite or something, which I haven't tried yet. Is the rev important? Which versions ought I be using?
