If you're using a WiiU, do not connect the USB drive to the system until AFTER you have gone into Wii mode.

Also, on a WiiU you want the drive plugged into the top USB port on the back. This is the opposite of which port to use on a regular Wii.

or just hold 'b' on the gamepad to load right into vWii and bypass WiiU menu

Right, you just gotta make sure the drive isn't connected in WiiU mode, if I mess up and forget, then the drive won't work again until I do a power cycle.

The drive should work regardless if its plugged in during the Wii U menu. I never unplug my drive.
