I have been searching for the safest or best method to hack my Wii U. I have found several methods and guides. I tried some, but they did not work.

What guide or method do you recommend?

Update to 5.5.1, use wiiubru.com/go to download the HBL, set up WUP installer GX2 and install games using https://github.com/dojafoja/FunKii-UI

HBL is just a launcher for Homebrew. You don't play games through it.

But yes, you can play games online installed through WUP installer.

I actually had a quick question concerning this. Is 5.5.1 the latest update? Or do we need to somehow figure out how to update the firmware only a certain ways?

5.5.1 is the latest firmware so if you have it you are good to go if you are on a lower firmware I would update the wiiu now as a new update is expected just before zelda botw comes out on March 3rd.
