In what way did it not work well? Was it slow or what?

Not really slow, I just had lots of transcoding issues. I made a dedicated media server to run my media and used plex as the base in Nas4Free, FreeNas, and many other setups to see if it worked better. The specs for the server were i3-3220, 8GB ram, 120SSD for transcoding, two 1TB drives for media, running on a 1gbit network all hardwired. But no matter what I kept getting bottlenecks, the on-the-fly transcoding was not working properly (and it was not a major job, it was just a 720p mkv ~300mb in size). I assigned the SSD to do the transcoding (bought specifically for this purpose) no change. I know I could of converted the media to something that didn't need transcoding, but as I have two 1Tb drives that have lots of mkv's I didn't really want to go down this route.

So I decided to set up a Windows machine and install Plex, no difference even with tweaks to the settings, transcoding, etc. Removed Plex and installed UMS, works beautifully, even on heavy jobs like 1-2Gb mkv's. This could all be user error, or just me being lazy. But I just ended up going with UMS and never really tried to work with plex again.

Edit:

After another attempt at Plex, I have found out what the issue was (I knew my CPU was crap, but apparently it was literally bad and died on me). After an upgrade and some testing I have moved over from UMS to Plex, and have loved it ever since.

Couldn't get to the link before it was removed, but I gather it was basically Plex streaming transcoded content to the other devices. Guess I'll give it a try with my Emby setup for the heck of it, should work just as well as far as watching stuff on a 240p screen goes (no WiiU here).

Plex Sucks.
Have you ever used plex? I assume no since you're saying it sucks. Unless you're a Kodi user who pirates and streams his shows. I run a whole media server in my house with it and Usenet. It even lets me take the videos on the go with ease on my iDevices without needing to deal with shitty itunes

I remember years ago while vacationing in Florida, was walking along the beach, and come along a group of naked people sunbathing, wouldn't have been bad but I had my 9yr old daughter w me. I didn't know then that they have nudist beaches down there. (St. Petersburg, FL) Not sure if still do, was 20 yrs ago.

I'm surprised there's no religion where you're always naked. and people arguing that it's their religion to be so, as it's how god created us
