I have an Asus X555LAB laptop that has a faulty motherboard. When it is unplugged from AC power the screen flickers to the point of the laptop being unusable so I started to look in the market for a new laptop. But then something popped into my head. it would be significantly cheaper to buy a replacement motherboard from the internet. But something else also popped into my head... I remember that a few years ago I saw a page with my laptop and advertised that it could have an MX940 GPU in it and this would be miles better than the intergraded HD5500 Graphics that the laptop came with. the only problem is that the laptop I was looking at was not the X555LAB it was the X555LB.

Before I continue to let me just say that there is an X555LA out there and those use the older Haswell CPUs mine is indeed an X555LAB with the Broadwell i7. My PC seems to be another variant off of the X555LA.

Looking at the pictures of each motherboard they look ridiculously similar in fact I am rather pressed to find a single difference between the two. Looking at pictures of my own laptop motherboard I am able to see what seems like the memory solder points for the GPU. Which has me seriously considering buying the motherboard and heatsink for the X555LB and putting it on my laptop? I know this seems incredibly stupid but if you look at the pictures you will see exactly what I am talking about.

i might be out almost 300$ idk what i will do with a motherboard that doesn't work
I'm fairly confident that it'll be compatible, but just to make sure, scrutinize the images and make absolute certain that all the connectors are in exactly the same positions.

Also keep in mind that the MX graphics card would need a heatsink, which thinking about it now, would most likely not be in the laptop you have now. You might need to do some research into if the chassis are the same between them, and if you could also buy the CPU/GPU heatsink from the LB to complete the upgrade.

i have been able to find the heatsink but i am looking for a motherboard that has the same processor... and i would have to take my lappy apart to compare

Doesn't matter if it's the same processor, just that it's in the same place (and you'd obviously want the same or better if you want to upgrade)

ok but i'd seek professional advice before spending your $$$. If you decide to go for it, you could first remove your mobo, closely inspect all the solder points etc then maybe re-flow the gpu and give her another go!

as example buyed a asus k93sv.. then i changed the mainboard from a k93sm in it
then i changed my MB with a X93sm MB
all the same mainboards with other processors
i give it a new keyboard and a new power switch too
i changed the ram on day one from 8 to 16gb
changed the 2 1terrabyte hdds against one 250gb ssd
forget that i changed my crappy wlan card against a AC one ( i have tapped the pin with the bluetoothswitch and yet its always on..
no other way to start it )
