My friend got one of these, since they already had a 3DS, and didn't want to pay 200$ for that system design. The decal skin actually doesn't look that bad as you would think.

As you can see, not even a black border around the top screen, and that's an official case (I don't think there even are third party casings yet).

Yeah it should work but if I remeber it correctly Nintendo said that the black border was there to improve the 3d experience. Im not sure exactly what way it's improved. Less Ghosting or something like that?

The black border on my 3DSXL has a matte finish, so it may be about reducing glare when playing outdoors.

It would be cool but sadly I think the 3ds top screen has to be black around the outside for the 3D to work but any type of clear color would be amazing.

No the black border is not needed. In one of the "Iwata asks" for the 3DS XL they said that they made the border around the top screen of the original 3DS black so that the 3D effect would be more noticeable.
But now that top screen of the XL is really big they make other colors for the insides (only black and white so far I think). I've got that Pikachu 3Ds XL when it came out here in Europe and the inside is white like on the picture of the completely white XL, it looks really nice.
Oh and the clear case 3DS XL is also from one of the "Iwata asks" about the 3DS XL. They made a prototype or 2 like this to demonstrate something about the new kind of plastic they used the XL, but are unfortunately not planning to release a clear edition at the moment.

I used a thing called displex on my old 3DS before, it does wonders on the outside casing, takes some time to polish and get rid of the scrathces but it works since it microscopically melts the plastic, doesn't leave any smudging or anything. The under side was a little scratched on mine, the one in the picture shows some serious scratches though getting rid of those will take an hour at least, no joke.
