'The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition' next-gen update impressions

You might have missed it or postponed your gaming plans over the end of year rush (I know I did), but mid-December saw the launch of the much anticipated, and delayed, next-gen update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition. The game launched as a free upgrade for PC owners as well as last-gen consoles but also as a standalone purchase on new systems. For many, it might be the first time getting into the game as it was the case for myself; and while I am nowhere close to finishing this expansive title that can take up to 100 hours to complete, I can share some thoughts on how the title holds up on new systems after having spent some time with it.

For me, it was an opportune time to finally get into The Witcher 3 as I recently finished The Witcher 2 and was itching to experience more of Geralt of Rivia’s adventures. The Witcher 3 is not lacking in such adventures with its open-world universe that teems with original side-quests on top of the two expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, included in the Complete Edition. The mediaeval fantasy setting is brought to life with its detailed environments, original characters and fluid combats.

The story, which still holds up well today, is still the same as when the game launched on last-gen systems as this is more akin to a soft “remaster” of sorts. What this version brings is some quality of life upgrades that make the game feel more like a contemporary one. Sign casting, which didn’t feel too intuitive in The Witcher 2, is now faster; tweaks to the map that dynamically hide it when not engaged in combat make for a more immersive experience while you take in the gorgeous landscapes; and the new Photo Mode now enable you to immortalise and share those landscapes.

When The Witcher 3 first launched, there were some notable bugs (although not as much as Cyberpunk 2077), and these have been (mostly) ironed out in the next-gen update. ‘Mostly’ because some players have experienced issues with this version but my experience with it on the Xbox Series S has been flawless.

As for the visuals, the next gen update brings support for dynamic resolution scaling, DLSS and Ray Tracing on supported systems. On the Series S, there’s the option to toggle between Performance Mode and Quality Mode. The latter aims for a gameplay at 30 fps while delivering increased resolution and better image fidelity. Performance Mode on the other hand favours smoother gameplay over visual quality with up to 60fps performance. I’ve mostly opted for the latter as the game already looks good on the small screen that I am playing on.

Despite those visual enhancements, there are times that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition reminds us that it is an upgrade of an old-gen game. Some NPCs can look more bland than others while other models’ animations might not be natural. However, these are minor gripes that can easily be overlooked.

This next-gen update to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition makes it the best way to experience the game, especially if you’ve been planning to do so and haven’t gotten around to. It’s a huge time-sink but an enjoyable and immersive one that holds up well on new systems.

With zero attempts to do something about clunky and floaty superficial combat. But hey, it's a just bunch of free mods bundled together.

Is the level cap still at level 100?
I've got lots of Relic silver and steel swords at level 98 and 99 and I'd hate to grind again trying to farm for new gear when I upgrade myself from a Ps4 to a Ps5 slim.

It's fun to play, but the characters get fuzzy every few seconds b/c of some annoying camera pendulum trick and their are other weird graphic quarks that I assumed would have been polished. 10/10

I'm waiting at least 4 months before downloading the next-gen update off of GOG to give the devs time to iron out all the kinks. Anybody who's a PC game remembers how the update cycle for the first version of The Witcher went.

If your half way through then dont bother. You wont get any of the already fmearned teophies so the ps4 will have the furst half and rhe os5 will have the rest.

Thats another stupid thing $ony did. Seoerste trophies for the consoles. Should be like xbox, 1 game 1 set of achievements.
Thars why i hate these upgraded games. 2 sets if trophies si you have to start all over again to get all rhe trophies.

For these kong ganes its not really an option.

$ony screw up everything and are NOT "for the players" and this is another proof they should drop thst slogan.
I have many more examples why they should drop it. They are "for the noney" is more true.

Ive got a few ganes with next gen updates and still using the ps4 version on ps5 due to many things.
1 exampke is snowrumner has a stupid sound from the controller and thats so annoying and cant be disabled.
2, witcher 3 trophies dont cross progress.
Same as spiderman miles, RE Village, and a few others.
There are also graphical glitches. Most next gem updates dint look as good. Yes they have ray tracing but you add bugs and RTX wont save it.
Cant think of more examples but so far nearly every update isnt done well.
Sime are great, most poor effort and just a port and needs lots of polish.
RE Village is awesome, looks even better.
Destiny 2 also great.
Rainbow Six Siege, the same with a higher fps. Thats about it.
Oh. Subnautica 1 + 1.5. Smaller gane size but not much difference. A little polish and shine and fps. Still same bugs.

The game is already quite old that they will probably never change the main code of it and I don't think it's that bad...

Though I would never finish such game, but I totally liked The Witcher 2 but it was a more linear with wide open map parts so it was much easier to get a hold on it and finish it and it had a damn good story...

I liked a lot Skyrim too, but for example Skyrim is what I would consider superficial combat, clunky... I mean I spent hundreds of hours on Xbox 360 and most was pressing one button for combat and it's like: attack 1 > pause > attack 2 > pause > attack 3; restart and repeat 4 ever and still liked a lot the game though I never finished it either...
I know I should play this, I own it on several platforms. I really just can't be bothered.
Same here, I played a few hours on a very old version many years ago and that's it, it's too big and hard to get a hold on it or even remember anything about it's story...

But I totally recommend The Witcher 2, maybe there is some good graphics mod to be able to play it better at this time, no idea, but the game is very different from The Witcher 3, it's much easier to finish it as it's a more linear type of game but has a great story that you will remember which is hard to say the same the 3rd since it's just too massive...
