Texas court sides with Nintendo on Wii Remote patent, overturns previous jury verdict and $10m fine

Back in 2017, Nintendo lost a court battle, where iLife Technologies took them to court, claiming that they originally had the patent for motion-sensing technology, and that the controllers used for the Nintendo Wii and Wii U both infringed upon them. Their patent was used for motion-sensing in the medical industry. iLife sought $144 million in damages, and after a jury deliberation, they were awarded a smaller sum of $10 million. Nintendo immediately filed for an appeal in court, and now, after two years, a verdict has been handed down. The federal courts in Dallas, Texas, have ruled that the patent was too vague and "impermissibly trying to cover the broad concept of using motion sensors to detect motion". With this ruling, the $10 million dollar fine against Nintendo has been thrown out, invalidating iLife's claims to the patent.

The patent they had should never have been granted to begin with

it was a patent on making use of data from a motion sensor to determine motion

someone at the company said "Hey look at that hard drive protecting fall detection in my laptop! lets patent that for nothing in particular!"

seems like jurors just like to be able to say "I just awarded someone millions of dollars"

So uh... Can nintendo sell some brand new wiimotes in 2020 then? :P
At the very least could use some of those battery covers that have the sync button built in.

Honestly, fuck nintendo.
Wish they had lost this case as punishment for charging users for online(not me I'm not stupid enough to pay em) and releasing port after port of old games we've already played. I'd rather see mario bros & kart on Xbox and playstation and do away with nintendo.

You're mad at Nintendo for charging 20 bucks a month, and right after, you support Sonny and Microsoft who literally charge three times as much for their online. Nice logic there, buddy.

Yes but Xbox is much more worth it. Consoles should have free online like PC has but at least you get something when paying for Xbox live, you get 4 games a month and not worthless SNES games. On a Nintendo console you're supposed to be able to turn it on and go straight online, no bs signing up, entering codes n all that shit. You're arguing against you're own pocket, think they call it a fanboy.

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".

It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

    It's not a Nintendo / iQue official product, it's a 3rd party custom.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
