Square Enix Wants To Release A Major Final Fantasy Every 1-2 Years

Wow, and I thought it it couldn't get any worse. I miss the older Final Fantasy titles like 5 and 7. I hope they can make just one more good one.

The problem with spending years developing a single game is that technology is always evolving. Even for a console that doesn't change hardware wise, new ideas, new algorithms, new game engines are constantly being developed. If you spend years developing a game, you face the problem that the content done early in the game may not be consistent with how the trend is advancing.

The 2 year development period is from the start of the game to the end of the game, so that doesn't mean one game is released every 2 years like the title suggests unless they plan to start developing the next game as soon as they end one of them

Meh. A good thing and a bad thing. The same engine and different story + tweaks on the possible bugs could actually be a blessing for some games/genres. A good story on the other hand may take quite a while to make from bits and pieces. Just by looking at old and new AAA RPGs/JRPGs, the small odds in the game itself is made up by the story (yes I'm looking at you Fallout 1&2 and many others).

Also SE Japan, get something out or start working harder. SE Eidos Montreal beat you this year pretty bad.

This is gonna turn into CoD.

The formula is gonna go past a possible FF#-2 to a minimum FF#-4.

This is just going to result in more half-baked titles, I can feel it.
Miyamoto is known for saying "A delayed game is eventually good, a bad game is bad forever", made famous in particular by the infamous delays for Ocarina of Time.
Of course, Nintendo has all the time they need to produce their BIG titles like Skyward Sword, Super Smash Brothers Brawl or Super Mario Galaxy, I'm not sure Square Enix with their current track record has that luxury any more.

On the other hand, titles such as Majora's Mask and Super Mario Galaxy 2 expanded on a previous title, like a complete reworking of the same game. Is that how Final Fantasy XIII-2 works?

Let's think of it this way, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, so called AAA titles of the west by that article, they're more like "short novels" by their genre so they don't take as long to develop.
RPGs by nature, western or japanese, are "very long novels" so they should naturally, take much longer to develop as you have to rely less on an engine and more on the story and how you work with it.

RPGs trying to compete with other genres isn't going to hold up well, sadly.

The last 3-4 tittles of CoD didnt take long time because they pretty much had the engine to make it(They basically used the same one, just improved and tweaked it after each game) without having to worry about starting from scratch. Same for Assassins Creed. Western people find jrpg boring most likely because they found out that you actually have to use up your time to finish it.

More than saying that others are being off-topic, nope.
Back to the JRPGs, I'm not a fan of FF much. I miss some other games, like Chrono trigger and chross. Way better than some modern games.

Maybe they can make a GOOD Final Fantasy, instead of over saturating the market with crap. I know 12 gets a lot of flak for some reason (certain MMO elements), and while the story was kinda cliche, it had a ton of content in it. Bunch of dungeons, a world, cities you would interact with, side quests, etc. Maybe they should go back to the successful method, and not pump more on rail cinematics like 13.

I think Versus is going to the last great Final Fantasy title. I was so pissed when SE said they were going to remake FF X. That game is pure shit IMO. The storyline wasn't even that good. I can wait for FF VII and VIII but don't waste time with FF X.



Why JRPG are failing in America? JRPGs take patience, which a lot of North Americans no longer have. Proof: Myself and others I know.
