I think someone once did that and got banned from online. Not sure though.

It is, but you can get banned if you play online with this.
It was supposed for Nintendo, when they played in the Global Testfire.

There are several hacks around that can do that (e.g. Unused Gear Python script for yourself or DojoHax for changing them in Dojo)
