Sony's new remote-play only device finally has a name and a price. The streaming only device is officially called the PlayStation Portal remote player and will launch later this year for $199.99 USD (219.99 EURO / 199.99 GBP / 29,980 YEN).

The handheld sports an 8inch LCD screen capable of playing games remotely at up to 1080p60. The device includes all features from the PlayStation 5 DualSense such as adaptive triggers and haptic feedback.

PlayStation Portal remote player brings the PS5 experience to the palm of your hand. It includes the key features of the DualSense wireless controller, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback*. The vibrant 8-inch LCD screen is capable of 1080p resolution at 60fps, providing a high definition visual experience that's expected from the high quality games created by world-class developers.

PlayStation Portal is the perfect device for gamers in households where they might need to share their living room TV or simply want to play PS5 games in another room of the house. PlayStation Portal will connect remotely to your PS5 over Wi-Fi**, so you'll be able to swiftly jump from playing on your PS5 to your PlayStation Portal. PlayStation Portal can play supported games that are installed on your PS5 console and use the Dualsense controller. It also includes a 3.5mm audio jack for wired audio. PS VR2 games, which require the headset, and games that are streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium's cloud streaming, are not supported.

Pre-orders for the device will go live later this year.

Sony have also announced a new Pulse Elite headset priced at 149.99 USD (149.99 EURO, 129.99 GBP, 18,980 YEN) that offers lossless audio, retractable boom mic and built in an AI noise cancelling feature.

Their new wireless ear buds also have a name - Pulse Explore , and also feature the above AI noise cancelling tech and dual mics and these are priced at an eye-watering 199.99 USD (219.99 EURO, 199.99 GBP, 29,980 YEN).

Only for use with PS5® consoles.

A PS5™ system (sold separately) is required to use PlayStation Portal™.

Only one PlayStation Portal™ can be connected to a PS5® console at any one time.

Looks like this only works if you have a PS5 (?). I'm hoping hackers crack this overpriced streaming device and see if there's any potential.

Let me guess.....you NEED a ps5 otherwise it's useless?

I sure hope no one's expecting this to be a new Vita.

Would actually be really cool if someone could make homebrew for PS Portal and Wii U to essentially make a Wii U gamepad alternative.
I'm going to bet that it's using some codec that would be too taxing for the WiiU

Switch or Switch 2 maybe

Well the worse would be people thinking you don't need a PS5 to use it, so it is going to be fun coming November 15. It is also sold out on Amazon, Target, and Best Buy here in the US.
Curious how many people miss the point of it, myself.

inb4 everyone returns them because they realize it's next to worthless outside the home

also nice necrobump

that's what i have been trying to tell everyone from the very beginning from the very first day the useless thing was rumored
It even says on the product page that it's useless without a PS5 so people that don't have a PS5 are either:
A) Try to scalp it.
B) Uninformed thinking it's a new PlayStation handheld like PSP/Vita.

What's preventing them from extending to "legacy" PS4 support and other cloud based services?

They even made the DualSense incompatible with PS4 so that's wishful thinking. Sony can be assholes when they want.

Good thing the Chinese made DualSense lookalike controllers and they're really good!

So long, Micro USB!

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

  • BigOnYa @ BigOnYa:
Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.
  • AncientBoi @ AncientBoi:
    I don't pirate them, I Use Them :mellow:. Like I do @BigOnYa 's couch :tpi::evil::rofl2:

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
  • cearp @ cearp:
It's nice to not have to have a lot of physical things though, saves space
