Shigeru Miyamoto honoured by Bafta

Shigeru Miyamoto – the influential Japanese video games designer behind titles such as Mario Bros and Donkey Kong – has been honoured by the British Academy of Film and Television Arts. He will receive the Fellowship at this year's Bafta Video Game Awards, which take place on March 19.

"The Fellowship is the highest accolade the Academy can bestow on an individual for their creative work," said David Parfitt, chairman of Bafta. "We are honoured to have Miyamoto with us to accept his award. With previous honorees including Hitchcock, Kubrick and Pinter, it is only fitting that Miyamoto be recognised alongside these other pioneers for his groundbreaking work. He helped to develop an entire creative industry, and is still a major force in its continuing success."

Miyamoto, general manager of analysis and development at Nintendo, has created some of the most iconic video games in history. He is widely considered to be one of the most important and influential figures in the games industry, and came up with the idea for the Wii, Nintendo's innovative game console which uses motion-sensitive controllers rather than a traditional control pad.

"I am very grateful to be able to receive this award from the British Academy," said Miyamoto. "Our video games cannot be created by one person; since Donkey Kong until the most recent New Super Mario Bros game for the Wii, I have been working closely with a number of friends for three decades in order to develop fun and enjoyable games. I would like to receive this honourable award on behalf of all of these dependable colleagues."

The list of nominations for the Bafta Video Game Awards is dominated by Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which broke records when it went on sale in November, grossing more than $1 billion.

Winners in each category will be chosen by panels of industry experts. Members of the public can vote for their favourite game in one category, sponsored by retailer Game. The shortlist of the 10 best games of 2009 includes Assassin's Creed II, The Beatles: Rock Band and Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks. Votes can be registered at www.baftagameaward.com.

A great man for games and handhelds/consoles.

He did push the SD card of the DSi, if anyone remembers

Wow, that's interesting. As far as I'm concerned, he deserves it, especially for the Super Mario Bros Series. Miyamoto is probably the sole reason why I love platformers as much as I do.
