is it possible to remove homebrew by backing up all data and do a system restore? I'm trying to get my 3DS repaired through Nintendo since most of my hardware is failing. (Card slot busted, buttons don't work nearly as well, etc.)

a system restore or format will not remove of the cfw. You would need to use 3ds.guide and the uninstall cfw to remove of it properly.
