When on the mobile Site, pop up ads show up, causing a new tab to open with one of those "congratulations!" B.s. spam things.

Please fix this, mods.

Thanks!

Edit by Costello: we are really sorry about this, we've recently changed ad providers and we specifically instructed them not to use any popup ads, these are the absolute worst. I have filed a complaint and this will be resolved shortly. I will update this thread when I hear from them. If you have a screenshot of the popup ads or URLs of the popup pages this would help, please PM them to me

Or maybe... the reason that they can apparently offer much higher revenue than other providers is because they rely on deceptive adverts such as these to ensure they get higher click-through rates... ?
We were getting good results before the deceptive ads started appearing, so, not really.
Once the deceptive ads started appearing, I submitted this particular question to our supplier and they have given me an acceptable answer. The deceptive ads are a problem for them as much as they're a problem for us. If/when these ads get too bothersome, we might just end up giving up on our supplier and then they'd lose business.

Just to show you we're serious about finding long term solutions for this, this gives you an idea on how many emails I'm exchanging with them lately about the deceptive ads:

We're working on identifying the source platform that's generating the deceptive ads. It's more complicated than it sounds.

I’m also on an iPhone (7+). With pop ups blocked in settings these adds still take over and you can’t go back forcing you to kill safari and start over. Is there a better way?

uBlock Origin for Firefox. It works on quantum mobile as well.
I never have to see an add again. You can also just use some specific filters as well.
Not everyone wants to use Firefox for android, and a fair few people are also using iOS devices which don't have add-on support for Firefox, so this isn't an ideal solution. Also some people actually want to support certain sites like GBAtemp by showing ads.
An adblocker is not the solution here, it's for Costello to get the ad company to stop showing popup ads.

Good point... But don't Patreon supporters get ad-free stuff, or is that my imagination?

They do, because they support the site with actual money instead of having ads. For people who don't have free money like that though, they can just disable their adblocker and support temp that way.

Thanks to the OP to bring up this topic. Experienced it as well a couple of days ago, even worse then mentioned. On my phone the browser (Chrome) didn't open a new tab, but use the existing one. And as nagging as those ads are, my attempts at using the back button to get back to GBATemp got stomped by an instant redirection.

Im part of that crowd except the add hijacks safari and I can’t do anything but force close safari and try to find where I was in whatever thread I was reading.

we have managed to make changes that should only enable Adsense ads (so basically no other format is possible) for most traffic source where popups/deceptive ads have been reported to appear.

Should anyone get any deceptive ad or popup from now on, could you please post screenshots here ? thanks!

i thought everybody knew cocktails are like 75% ice
  • Veho @ Veho:
    Yeah but not like this.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's not like they're complaining that their Slurpee is 99% ice or something, but if the cocktail calls for "shot of vodka, shot of vermouth, shot of gin, shot of Campari, three shots of juice, squirt of lemon" and ends up being a thimbleful of booze, that's a problem.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
the funny thing is cocktails in norway are only allowed to have 1 20ml shot of booze
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    so..... yeah
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
we're used to only having a thimbleful of booze

same thing if you want whisky on the rocks or something, you can't get a double
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but you could buy as many shots of whisky (or anything else) as you want and ask for a glass of ice and pour them in

    it's dumb

    Maybe.

There was a comparison of the number of Ibuprofen poisonings before and after they limited the maximum dosage per box or per pill (i'll look that up). No limit on the number of boxes you can still buy as many as you want, so people argued it was pointless.
  • Veho @ Veho:
But the number of (accidental) poisonings dropped because drinking an entire package of ibuprofen pills went from "I need a new liver" to "I need a new box of Ibuprofen".
  • Veho @ Veho:
Here we have ketoprofen that used to be prescription-only because of the risk of toxic dosages, but then they halved the dose per pill and sell them in bottles of six pills apiece instead of twenty and it doesn't need a prescription any more. Yes you can buy more than one bottle but people simply don't.

Usually accidentally overdose of ibuprofen here is from people taking like cold medicine then ibuprofen for a headache and the combination is over what they need
