NTRBoot Released!

It's here!

Info

@Normmatt has created a way to run B9S .firm files from bootrom via a DSi Flashcard and a magnet! This works on every 3DS on any firmware version.

For installation without a PC, user @TheCyberQuake has created a pack which will automatically install B9S and copy over essential starter homebrew from the flashcard's SD to the 3DS's. This will mainly be used for PC-less B9S installations. If you have a PC with you, use 3ds.guide. Read more here: https://gbatemp.net/threads/481141/

How does this work?

This works because of a flaw in the bootrom. Before the bootrom boots the NAND, it checks to see if Start+Select+X is held down, and if the shell is closed. If these requirements are met, it will boot an NDS cartridge from the bootrom. This give that cartridge bootrom access. You might be wondering how you'd hold down buttons while the shell is closed, and why you need a magnet. If you put a magnet in a specific spot on the 3DS, it will go into sleep mode. Using this, you can boot the NDS cartridge with the buttons held down while in sleep mode! Using a reflashable flashcard, you can boot B9SInstaller using the flashcard, and easily install it on your 3DS.
The 2DS doesn't need a magnet since a switch puts it to sleep instead of a magnet.

What does this mean?

  1. Any 3DS model on any firmware can be hacked with minimal effort
  2. You can unbrick any 3DS model from any type of brick.
    - Remember, you don't need a NAND backup for this. Just do a CTRTransfer.
    - This does not apply to MCU bricks.
  3. Even consoles with fried NAND, or even the NAND chip physically removed, can use this
This is incredibly impressive stuff, and will most likely be released soon! edit: now!

FAQ

Q: Can Nintendo patch this?
A: Nope! Not without a new hardware revision.

Q: My flashcard is blocked by my firmware! Can I still use this?
A: Yes! The flashcard blacklist is not enabled on the bootrom.

Q: Why can't this work with my flashcard?
A: The installation requires you to flash NTRBoot to the flashcard's nand. Most DS flashcards, such as the original R4, have a ROM, which is not flashable.

Q: Can I install NTRBoot on my flashcard without another 3DS system?
A: If you can run NDS roms on your 3DS with it, then yes. If it's blocked on your 3DS version, then you'll need another 3DS system to use it.

Q: Will my 3DS flashcard work?
A: No, only the NDSi flashcards listed above.

Q: Will any other flash cards work?
A: Only the ones listed in the OP. However keep in mind that flashcards such as the DSTT, Supercard DS2 and R4 SDHC Dualcore are planned to be supported in the future.

Q: I tried to do this with my cartridge and it didn't work?
A: It doesn't work with regular DS cards.

Q: Can I unbrick from a ____ brick?
A: Considering the card has access to the bootrom, yes! This can unbrick any brick (except MCU), unless you've taken a knife to the motherboard.

Q: Can I install B9S on the latest firmware with this?
A: Again, since the card has access to the bootrom, you can do this easily! Just plug in your flashcard, boot up using the magnet and button combination, and install.

Q: Does this work on the New Nintendo 2DS XL?
A: Yes!

Unfortunately not yet. I have the same type of card as you & I tried it, but it says it's not supported. I thought I had the correct card when initially thinking about it, but there were a few minor differences in the logo of the card. Idk if I should wait until my flashcard is supported in the future or buy the compatible flashcart before prices skyrocket.

Update: My card and his card is a R4i SDHC 3DS RTS.
Well rip I guess

I hope so... That would save me the worrying about buying a currently supported flashcart or not. I have the R4i SDHC 3DS RTS with the wifi logo. The gold 3ds rts's logo doesnt have the wifi logo on it, plus the official website on it is different.
Well shit... I have the exact same card as well. But mine is 2015. :/

Yep... Only time will tell to see if my card will be supported or not. xD
Just buy an acekard or a r4i gold 3ds rts, i would buy an acekard because it still works after flash, cause i have both a lite and a 3ds. $20 ain't that much.

Yes, for me $20 isn't much. For others here it may be considered expensive, social class and all that jazz is a whole different topic I like to keep private. I just like to be sure that the item is worth buying and considering my flashcard may be supported in the future & ntrboot I believe is nearly a week old since it has been made public. It has a lot of things to be worked on, like when similar big projects in the 3ds hacking scene like arm9loaderhax has been released, and over time, it has gotten better and better with countless new features, improvements, and such until boot9strap became the better option for CFW.

so, after waiting for an answer, i saw from another post that barely closing the n2ds does indeed work. luckily though i had a neighbor friend of mine fetch some magnets they had. only one of them - out of the many they had - worked on the n2ds xl. everything is accounted for now.

@yardie no. i was only here trying to ask for assistance. i discourage people to press reply on my posts.

For the people asking R4 SDHC isn't supported yet. It'll be coming eventually but right now the development team doesn't any of the SDHC cards or the firmware last I heard.

This'll probably trigger a surge in sales of those.

Similar to the Good ol Gateway Games Zelda, Cubic Ninja etc.

Good for the R4 Team... meh.

Quick sort-of newbie question. What is a MCU brick?
I have a couple of Old 3DS classic with blue screen and error code FFFFFFFF (broken NAND).

I say broken NAND because the user tried the old downgrade method with a bad SD and all that was backed up was a "dummy NAND" (only one char when viewing it in a Hex Editor). Of course the process failed (bad SD) and when a hadmod was tried that dummy NAND was written, rendering the console NAND completely bad (meaning no OTP, no firm, nothing inside of the chip is valid).

Is this considered MCU brick?

Thanks!

Nope, MCU is separate.
I'm pretty sure you should be able to restore this
If you boot up GodMode9 with NTRBoot, you should be able to do a CTRTransfer and restore your 3DS.
Correct me if I'm wrong though.

My Acekard 2i arrives today and I'll see how it goes...
I actually have a bunch of boards with missing NAND due to unlucky downgrade attempts and lack of attention back when there was no other way other than changing the whole board, so I always kept those boards after changing them.
It's gonna be a fun "project" to try to revive them :D
Thx for your insight, @Lia!
If anyone else has any other comments, please, I'd glad to "hear" it :D

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
