Hacking Noob question about NAND backups and system formats

If I make a backup of my system NAND and then format it to unlink it from my emuNAND, would I later be able to inject the NAND backup into the formatted system NAND or would that cause a brick?

You can, I did it.

Yes you can.
You will need to have it hardmod to have nand reinjected back to sysnand, Or you can rebuild Emunand with a Nand.bin/emunand.bin

doesn't gateway let you restore your nand? If you press up on the downgrade menu

I thought I didn't need a hardmod to re-inject the Nand backup, or is a hardmod only needed to make the procedure safe?
