Announced a few months ago, No Man Sky, the procedurally-generated space exploration game, was set to get its "biggest update so far" dubbed NEXT this summer. Hello Games issued an update today and revealed that No Man’s Sky NEXT will launch as a free update for PlayStation, PC, as well as launching on Xbox for the first time on July 24. The developers also released a new trailer for the update:

The NEXT update will include the followings:

Multiplayer
  • Team up a small team of friends and explore the universe together, or be joined by random travelers.
  • You can help friends to stay alive, or prey on others to survive.
  • Tiny shelters or complex colonies that you build as a team are shared for all players.
  • Fight as a pirate or a wingman in epic space battles with friends and enemies.
  • Race exocraft across weird alien terrains, creating race tracks and trails to share online.
  • Character customisation allows you to personalise your appearance.
Visual Overhaul
  • The game is fully playable in third or first person, both on-foot and in ship.
  • Planetary rings and improved space visuals make space more beautiful than ever.
  • Dramatically improved planetary terrain generation, ground textures, water and clouds bring the environment to life.
  • Significantly more detail added to ships, NPCs and buildings.
Unlimited Base Building
  • Bases can now be built anywhere on any planet.
  • Dramatically increased base building complexity and size limits.
  • Hundreds of new base parts.
  • Own multiple bases.
Command Freighters
  • Assemble and upgrade a fleet of frigates and command them from the bridge of your freighter.
  • Send your fleet out to into the universe, or deploy them to help you as you explore a specific system.
  • Improved freighter base building allows a truly custom capital ship.
  • Invite your friends aboard and take on challenging multiplayer missions from the Galactic Commision Station on your bridge.
"This is an incredibly important update for us, but it’s also just another step in a longer journey, and we’ll continue to support No Man’s Sky in this way for the foreseeable future," said Hello Games founder Sean Murray in a new blog entry.

Too little too late.
To be fair, they've added quite a lot so I'd be remiss in calling it "too little," but it's definitely far too late. Still, I think if they make enough waves, they could bring back some players or attract new ones, as the game will likely feel "complete" now. Also, the reality is that people forget a company's misdeeds with time, and with this substantial update and the amount of time it's been since launch, I think more and more people will start to forget/forgive Hello Games for their outright lies at launch.

But hey, if it's one thing, I doubt you'll ever see Shaun Murray act in any PR capacity ever again lol

To be fairly honest, i don't really think this can fix any of the disappointments that people had in the past. Most won't really bother trying the update because the interest in the game has pretty much died overall :/

This game is in serious need of some fixes, hopefully this update addresses them. first, they need to make mining less garbage or at least allow better optimization of automated mining. Mining now is complete garbage, with you having to slowly sweep your laser across the ore, while bright blinding flashes happen every second. It's trash. A good way to do this is to make veins smaller but give the same ore. That way I don't have to spend twenty minutes methodically panning my laser to get all the ore. Also, making it so that the laser doesnt just break the ore you're pointing at, but instead sort of drained the vein away would also fix this issue. Next, fast travel needs a better menu. Scrolling through a list is stupid, especially since old systems just disappear off the list if you go to too many systems. If we had a waypoint system, that would help severely. Only having the system your base (or after this update, bases) is on is just not enough. Next, getting new ships and having to refix them from scratch is very stupid. Why can't I just take the warp drive or gun or whatever from my old ship and put it on the new one? Instead, I have to gather all the ore and material to manually fix and upgrade every single part individually. Also, why does it cost so fucking much to get a new ship regardless of whether you buy it or find it. If I want to buy one, it cost absurd amounts, but if I find one, I have to spend essentially the same amount of money to fix the inventory. Why the fuck does it even cost money to fix the inventory? It's not like I'm paying someone to fix it, I'm just chucking money at it and it just fixes itself magically. Let us fix that with ores and other parts instead.

Of all the trailer updates in the past this one has me the most excited, I can't wait to find some ringed planets!
Hopefully normal gas giants have also made it into the game.

It's also pretty cool that third-person is being added, I didn't think they would do that.
Though I think that will be a very nice feature in co-op/multiplayer.

I remember a time when a game waa released and that was all you got unless an expansion pack was made. Now any game can become anything at any moment, which is both awesome and a terrible thing. While it means one can polish the game to perfection, it also means one can release unfinished half-games like this and reanimate them forever.

I'm personally surprised they continued to support this game. or even kept the company. Or kept using their real names.

Nah, but I played it when it first came out, which means I haven't played it since. I'll try it again when this update hits. I do like my exploration and resource management games, so there's hope.

Why? Imagine if they made a sequel instead of an update.
Then people would probably actually buy into it, except those already lost on the series from the starting travesty. Updates don't attract as many people as a brand new game does, if it was all there from the start then it'd be different. That's what I mean about "too late" anyway, not so sure about whether my "too little" statement holds true

You have to give credit where credit is due. Atleast they are doing something about the game after that whole shitstorm while most of them would have abandoned ship ages ago. Other developers would even dare you to ask more money to fix the mistakes they made.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?

  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
