Press Release
Detachable Controllers Reinvent Gaming

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In an introductory video released today, Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

Damn hype is real! Not sure if i want to get one though. Wonder if it runs on Android? Or there own shitty IOS based system. Splatoon seems to be there, so maybe it's backwards compatible as well! That would be amazing to take your Wii U Games on the go!

So is it called the switch because of how it can go from console to handheld instantly?

Or because of how you can change from attached to detached controllers? Or go from single to multiplayer?

P.S. this is technically going to be a 9th generation console right?

Probably as irrelevant as N64, Gamecube or DS different fonts. This isn't the first time Ninty has changed fonts to promote a console.

Nintendo had their name as part of the console name up until the Nintendo 64. After that names weren't as reliant on the word "Nintendo". People usually refer to the Nintendo Gamecube as just the "Gamecube", but at the same time you don't hear people calling the Nintendo 64 as the "64".

Maybe there is no significance to it, but it would be nice to have a new logo for a change.

I'm not looking forward to the "when will switch get haxxed?" threads less than a month after (let's be real, before) it's released. BTW, new 3D Mario! I'm very happy. Everything else I already either own or am waiting for. I hope Breath of the Wild's performance gets fixed before release though. Chronicles X managed to do a whole lot with the modest Wii U hardware so I'm not sure what's happening here. Either way, I'm hoping a stable 30 fps happens by March.

Except the iterations of Mario and Zelda tend to vary greatly. Plus they make a lot more than a couple franchises.
Dude, according to your profile you should be old enough to remember when nintendo created original software. The 64s controller was annoying, but we had awesome games. You should be on board with the rest of the oldfags who saw the Wii announcement, wiiu, 3ds, now nx/switch and saying "fuck nintendo, when are you gunna get it together?" I don't want to play zelda on a motion controller or some tablet, I want to play something new on I don't even care. If they create some new fun games on this underpowered piece of shit, I'll take it all back. But from what I've seen, it's the same old franchises on some convoluted "innovated" hardware. Oh look, you can play zelda again, but this time while walking your dog. Give me a break.

Despite that,,its official name is Nintendo Gamecube, hence the GCN letters referring to it. We call it gamecube simply for convenience... And because we are assuming you already know it comes from Ninty. As for the 64, well "64" is a number, (in this case, it meant 64 bits) not the name itself. It kinda has to go with Nintendo because it wouldn't make sense if you leave the nintendo out of it if you are out of context. Same for leaving the 64 out of Nintendo haha.

Numbers don't lie... the iPhone is one of the fastest phones out there...

If they're gimmicks then why are all the android manufacturer copying them?
There's no denying that the IPhone 6 and 7 are competent machines, they reach very high single-core scores as they're one of the first phones to use ARM's asymmetric big.LITTLE core design, that's not debatable. You can see how scores come close in multicore tests though, which is to be expected as they only have so much real estate on the die. Most Androids still use symmetric cores, which means that all cores are the same size, leading to lower single-core scores and similar multicore scores. This will of course change soon, but even I have to admit that the latest iPhones are pretty good, and I hate Apple. Between the 4S and the 6 Android has been leading the charge in technological innovation though, so let's not paint this in black and white - it's an arms race and the leader changes all the time, Apple hasn't been at the top consistently.

I also disagree with your point about touchscreens - dozens of iPhone-like phones were released before it, including Windows Mobile and Symbian ones. I personally had a Mio A701 at the time which blew the iPhone out of the water. I played Quake 2 on my phone back when iPhones didn't even support apps. God, that phone was baller.

The same applies to tablets. Popularising something and pioneering are two different things.

Judging by previous console announcements, does anyone have any idea if they will announce new games before the release of the hardware? I'd like to see what will be available for the Switch. That Mario game looked really nice too.
