Press Release
Detachable Controllers Reinvent Gaming

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In an introductory video released today, Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

@Foxi4 The game directly start streaming once the tablet is plugged-in which is a bit wierd, that when extra hardware is added at least the software should restart, or maybe Nvidia figured something out, or they only get better when it's restarted in console mode. This will dominate consumer tablet market.

So is it called the switch because of how it can go from console to handheld instantly?

Or because of how you can change from attached to detached controllers? Or go from single to multiplayer?

P.S. this is technically going to be a 9th generation console right?

The interface could be hotswappable, but remember that this is all just speculation, and it's probably false due to the complexity of such a design. Still feasible, just very unlikely.

The system comes with a regular controller... you're not forced to ever even take it out of the dock if you don't want to...

And if you don't like Nintendo games or systems just buy something else...
I love nintendo games. They're some of the most original and inventive, 20 years ago. Don't you guys ever get tired of waiting for the next mariokart, zelda, pokemon, etc. Its like the CoD guys waiting to buy the same game every year. Like, omg the next pokemon is gunna have more pokemon. Its old at this point. Or maybe I'm old at this point.

The gimmick to the systems is the only selling point they have at this point. Because its not original software or more powerful machines able to run games with more features. Its just, played out and annoying now. I want my old nintendo that cared about making fun original games, not profit margins.

Google outright copied Apple for Android after the iPhone was released...

The first version of Android wasn't even going to support a touch screen... it was going to look and work more like the Blackberries of the time...

Overpriced, sure... the iPhone isn't cheap... Google also charges $650/750 for the Pixel Phone as well as does Samsung...

The S7 isn't as powerful as the iPhone and yet it's same price as the iPhone...

You can get cheaper Android phones but they'll be nowhere near as powerful and won't get many if any software updates...
You're joking, right? The iPhones don't even compare to Androids. iPhone is going the way of Nintendo by only focusing on silly gimmicks rather than powerful hardware. Android is the Playstation to Apple's Nintendo. iPhones aren't even at a proper widescreen resolution, what makes you think their hardware is more powerful than Androids with 4K resolution and 2.8 octa-cores?

Has anyone seen the Dolphin emulator for iOS? No? Oh gee, I wonder why.

Apple has always been more powerful than your standard arm designed cores, now also with high core counts. A10 completely destroyed Samsung's and Qualcomm's custom cores.

Oh I see.

That sure explains why there are so much more graphically intensive games and applications on Android than iOS.

Numbers don't lie... the iPhone is one of the fastest phones out there...

If they're gimmicks then why are all the android manufacturer copying them?

Looks fine to me. Where exactly on the video do you see a terrible framerate that differs from when not on the go? I don't see any such thing.
as soon as he takes it on the god
the frames look like they dip severely.
tho could just be an editing mistake

What games are you talking about?

Almost everything that isn't for the shield or another android device specific to gaming is available for the iPhone / iPad...

A little strange how that article simply writes in the score for iPhone and yet shows a screenshot for Android phone performance. I don't trust it. Why didn't they have the devices compete on the same roster?

I remember when I played Twilight Princess on my iPad.

Oh wait I didn't. That was my S6.

That specific article was written before the iPhone was officially released using factory leaked benchmarks...

Except the iterations of Mario and Zelda tend to vary greatly. Plus they make a lot more than a couple franchises.
