I am new to jailbreaking a PS3, I have modded Wiis in the past and was curious if anyone has a recommended site to get the firmware, apps, etc. I found ps3jailbreakcfw.com but am not sure if I can trust it.

CFW gives entire control over the console. HEN/HAN/HFW can be termed as exploits that let you run Homebrew.
CFW is permanent once done right. It need not be activated on every restart but you have a higher risk of getting banned online. CFW work on only the fat PS3 and some PS3 Slim's upto the 2500 series.
HEN/HAN/HFW can be installed on any console. They need to be activated on every restart and are troublesome when you have to activate package files. But the chances of getting banned on HAN/HEN/HFW are lower when it comes to online play.

I would like the permanent one I believe, unless necessary I can leave it offline. I have a PS3 slim, CECH-2101A which appears to be compatible.

CFW went well, I am going to upgrade the hard drive before I go too far, thanks for the help.
Just FYI that 1.5TB is the max.
And instead of an HDD, you could use an SSD, but that's more expensive and honestly I never had any problem with PS3's speed (although I can feel some slowness with some PS4 games using an HDD e.g. Tekken 7).

Nah I'm getting value creep again. I look at a $50 console "but for just a few more dollars you could get XYZ" and I end up considering the Steam Deck.
