Hi there,

I only have two simple questions, so I apologize if I shouldn't have done that (but BEN drowned :creep:)

- I order an RGB-modded Japanese N64 which will also have the cartridge port slightly modified so I can use NTSC-U cartridges. I've been told the games are perfectly compatible and not region locked (besides the hardware lock, which I won't have). My question is, is there an exception to this rule? Are there games with compatibility issues? Which ones then?

- I'm trying to find a cheap (loose) NTSC-U version of Secret of Mana, cause the Japanese SFC version is cool but Japanese text isn't (even though I know the game very well, I need English to play in food conditions). I also have the PAL version in French (and a PAL SNES) which is perfect for text, but PAL 50Hz sucks and I heard it doesn't play well, or doesn't play at all on SFC even with an adapter cause it's somehow region locked (may be due to speed optimizations like few other games).

Would the NTSC-U version work well on my Super Famicom with my universal adapter? I guess it should if the game isn't region locked without speed/framerate compatibility issues since both NTSC-U and NTSC-J are 60Hz, but I'm just asking to be sure.

Many thanks! :creep:

N64 and SNES/SFC each only have 2 region codes, PAL and NTSC. US games will work on Japanese consoles and visa versa.

N64 doesn't actually need permanent mods. The blocking piece is removable.
An NTSC dedicated converter for either N64 or SNES would be a pass through. No significant circuitry, or a method to bypass the lockout chip. (that is: largely useless for PAL systems and PAL games)

Like the Snes, N64 has a physical lockout that requires needle nose pliers to remove the tabs, I think.
I've done the mod myself, you need those small garden twig clipper things and a file to do it without opening the console and that only works for the Japanese one as the American console has the tabs in the corners which you just can't get at with this method. Make sure to have a vacuum handy cos there will be a lot of plastic dust

Thanks for the tips but don't worry, everything will be done by professionals regarding my modded N64 so they'll do it along with the RGB output mod. I just wanted to be sure about the US games compatibility on JP console, but indeed it makes sense as it worked the same way on SNES/SFC. Thanks to all!
