You need emuNAND if the cartridge you want to play has an update version higher than your current real NAND System menu version.
To prevent updating your realNAND, you boot in EmuNAND Classic, and it will update the emuNAND instead of your real NAND, allowing you to play with your real cartridge but keep the console hackable.
Only Animal crossing, Pokemon X/Y and Tomodachi Collection NEED the retail cart, as they don't work in ROM form. all other currently dumped games work fine in ROMs.
You can of course play with your retail cartridge, even if it's not one of the three game above.
Just know that there are some cartridges which are not compatible between RealNAND and EmuNAND. It will reset your save file if you play on a different environment (or at best tells you it's corrupted without deleting it).
