Hello everyone. I first got into handheld gaming when my wife got me a Gameboy Advance for Christmas in 2001. When I was shopping at a video game store, I saw a device for sale called the "Pelican Games Downloader .NET" that had flash memory that could only store up to 96KB that let you play GB/GBC games. I bought it, and this was my first foray into homebrew handheld gaming. From there, I would acquire other handhelds and devices that would allow me to experience the homebrew scene:

-XROM for GB/GBC
-XROM for GBA
-GP2X (not a Nintendo handheld, but it could play emulated games)
-OpenPandora (great handheld emulator with a keyboard)
-RG351P (a good handheld emulator that is a beefed-up version of the GP2X architecture)
-Everdrive for GB/GBC
-Everdrive for GBA
-A bunch of Famiclones (these are cheap and fun, though you can't technically do homebrew)

I also acquired other Nintendo handhelds: Gameboy Pocket, Gameboy Color, DS Lite and the handheld that I've been using the most frequently (recently) is the original 3DS. I bought it fairly cheaply last year from Japan and I installed CFW on it. Because I changed it to English, I lost access to the eShop. I saw that there was a way to fix my access to eShop, but that seems quite long and convoluted.

I'm really impressed with the work being done with AGB_FIRM that lets me play GBA games on bare metal without having to VC inject the ROMs. I'm also pleasantly surprised that work is still being done with StellaDS (Atari 2600 emulator).

I was also a big fan of Flubba's emulators for GBA and DS back in the day. Thanks to this forum, I just found out that Flubba made an emulator for Punch-Out!! for the DS and that platform is the perfect way to play that game because of the dual screen. With my other handhelds, the screen is resized very narrowly.

Anyway, I love to browse and read the comments here and I thought that I would register so that I can post comments. My avatar is my own graphics handiwork on a Commodore VIC-20. I like to develop RPG games for that computer system. If you want to know more about my work, just do a Google search for "Realms of Quest VIC-20".

@Jayro, I don't see whats so special about the DS ML, its just a DS lite in a phat shell. At least the phat model had louder speakers, whereas the lite has a much better screen.

They probably said "Hey, why not we combine the two together and make a 'new' DS to sell".
  • Veho @ Veho:
It's a DS Lite in a slightly bigger DS Lite shell.

    It's not a Nintendo / iQue official product, it's a 3rd party custom.

Nothing special about it other than it's more comfortable than the Lite
    for people with beefy hands.

@SylverReZ if you could find a v5 DS ML you would have the best of both worlds since the v5 units had the same backlight brightness levels as the DS Lite unlockable with flashme

    but that's a long shot

A woman with no arms and no legs was sitting on a beach. A man comes along and the woman says, "I've never been hugged before." So the man feels bad and hugs her. She says "Well i've also never been kissed before." So he gives her a kiss on the cheek. She says "Well I've also never been fucked before." So the man picks her up, and throws her in the ocean and says "Now you're fucked."

anyways, we need to re-normalize physical media

if i didn't want my games to be permanent, then i'd rent them

Agreed, that why I try to buy all my games on disc, Xbox anyways. Switch games (which I pirate tbh) don't matter much, I stay offline 24/7 anyways.
  • AncientBoi @ AncientBoi:
    I don't pirate them, I Use Them :mellow:. Like I do @BigOnYa 's couch :tpi::evil::rofl2:

@BakerMan - you can still "own" digital media, arguably easier and better than physical since you can make copies and backups, as much as you like.

    The issue is DRM
  • cearp @ cearp:
You can buy drm free games / music / ebooks, and if you keep backups of your data (like documents and family photos etc), then you shouldn't lose the game. but with a disk, your toddler could put it in the toaster and there goes your $60

    :rofl2:
  • cearp @ cearp:
still, I agree physical media is nice to have. just pointing out the issue is drm
  • rqkaiju2 @ rqkaiju2:
i like physical media because it actually feels like you own it. thats why i plan on burning music to cds
