Hardware Joystick or +pad problem?

I have a 3DS where the cursor keeps scrolling up on the main menu and in games. I have tried different games and without games installed. Using the joystick or +pad I can change direction but as soon as these controls are released the cursor goes up as if one of the controllers were stuck up. I swapped out the joystick and stripped, cleaned the metal contacts, motherboard contacts and changed the rubber pad on the +pad and still the cursor scrolls up.
Is there anything else I can try?

You should start by calibrating the circle pad.

Many thanks for your quick and helpful reply. Unfortunately this did not work. I reverted to the default settings and then tried recalibrating 3 or 4 times without success. The cursor will stop if I push the joystick fully up. I can then use the +pad to move the cursor around. I am wondering if the second joystick was faulty or there is some other fault.

You already replaced the slider, it might be the d-pad that's faulty. Your best bet is to try and clean the points again.

The points are very clean. They were not bad to begin with but I gave them a good wipe over with isopropanol and made sure the metal discs were spot free. The metal discs all operate well.
I shall double check the alignment of the discs but I am not terribly hopeful that that is the problem. My daughter is very disappointed in me! lol

This might be a factory defect, I've heard about it happening before. I suppose you could calibrate the slider with an offset, off-center, so to speak, to make the slider think it's actually pointing down rather than up. You will probably lose the capacity to use the slider, but at least it won't go nuts all the time. It's also possible that by some amazing coincidence your replacement slider was DoA or that the ribbon is faulty or misaligned. Good luck, fiddle with it and don't give up!

Thanks guys for your very helpful and quick replies. I have ordered a new joystick and a set of the functional buttons (metal disc things!) for the +pad. I couldn't get the buttons in the UK so I will have to wait for a couple of weeks. I just hope the spares cure the problem and will stop my daughter staring at her Tomodachi Life game and sighing. lol. I fear the 'Father Christmas' list may have to include a new 3DS. Then I will be staring at my bank statement and sighing! lol.
