I'm on 5.5.1. I'm reading it can now play backups from HDD, then elsewhere I'm reading it can't? Could someone point me in the right direction as to whether the answer is yes or no and possibly drop me a link to a guide any help would be very very much appreciated

You can play only original digital downloads off your HDD, or Wii backups on vWii side

WiiU backups can be played from SD card, but not USB HDD.
