That's not correct at all. If a homebrew application comes in both formats then they should function just the same, the main difference as @Kwyjor has already explained, is that the .3dsx files can be launched from the Homebrew Launcher without the need of installing them, while the .cia files have to be installed in order to be used.
Now, since OP is trying to play a game, its .cia should be installed to be played, as there's no such thing as playing games from a .3dsx extension..

Sorry I cannot let you tell that, many devs have problems with CIA's and are not providing them due to bugs. So try to install EsayRPG via 3dsx and launch it. Do the same with the CIA and report back.

But if until yesterday I played with eDuke32 only in the .3dsx format, with very good results !
The homebrew game is running solely from a .3dsx file with no other files/folders required for it to run? Ok, maybe if it's a small, less than 1mb kind of game, and not anything above it.

Now that's a generic claim to make.. What devs that had/have problems with cia versions of their games or homebrew? And the game or software itself being buggy has nothing to do with the cia format.
So try to install EsayRPG via 3dsx and launch it.
Again, you don't install the .3dsx file you just put it in the 3ds folder.

When you say : "If a homebrew application comes in both formats then they should function just the same", this is not true.

Absolutely not! The .3dsx file needs the main game next to it (duke3d.grp: 40mb) plus other folders with respective .GRP files to play the addon episodes (each from 2 to 40mb size).

How can you not know Duke Nukem 3d? This is heresy!!! 😱

That's what i was saying, the .3DSX file acts as a way to load/launch the game. You should have EasyRPG's files set up just like they're supposed to, if you wish to load the game with the .3dsx file..

But EasyRPG Player does the same thing!!! It loads various user-made role-playing games.
A-and?
This 👇

So you got figured out now? You have all files needed to play the game in place etc.?
I can't tell you where the game files should be placed because i have never used this homebrew app, but there should be instructions on how to set it up on the creator's Github page or wherever it was posted..

If you knew dn3d, you already knew that other files were needed, .GRP files especially. 😉

..And that's your argument?

This is not mine actualy... but if you do not understand that .3dsx is using an environment and .cia another that lead to differences... and if one of this environment is changed/updated at some point that lead to even more differences... then I cannot say anything more.

Ladies and gentlemen, the cia version worked perfectly, without the need to install godmode9 or what the hell else. To load the rpg I'm interested in (Saint Seiya Densetsu: almost 2gb, an unbelievable size to be done with RPG Maker 2000 !) it took 5 minutes (sure, it consists of more than 10000 tiny files 😂). Now everything is fine. Thank you all, although some of the answers were misleading me and complicating unnecessarily my life. 😉

It's nice that you got it working, but @KleinesSinchen really does have a point. You should get godmode9 installed and do the necessary backups, because it's going to save you a lot more trouble if things go wrong. It can't possibly be as difficult as you think it is.

Guys, I should uninstall the latest version of EasyRPG Player (slow and unstable) to install the previous one, which apparently is considerably better. I know that FBI has to be used, but what exactly should I do?
Otherwise can I overwrite (without uninstalling) the one already installed with this older one?

I got the answer from one of the developers who explained two things:

1) The .3dsx version does not work because the .xml file had to be deleted from the folder (not the other way around, as was suggested to me 😂);
2) The error that occurred in the oldest version I installed was due to the large number of files to load at once and the lack of available RAM. So it is already good that the recent version works, although it has flaws and is slow in several places. 🙄

  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
