Hey.
I haven't gone on my 3ds with luma cfw in over 6 months so can someone fill me in on what happened thanks.

Can i system update?

mainstream news: yes, if you have luma cfw you can update system version with no worries, but to update luma you will need to follow this guide
aside from that, github changed something (revoked TLS 1.1) and you will need to update FBI and other homebrews manually, and freeshop changed again from dev to a community mantained one, so check if you have the right one (link)

Sighax came out, if you still on a9lh you can update from with the holy guide (whose url slightly changed to "3ds.hacks.guide")
luma cfw introduced a way to execute .3dsx without installing anything on the NAND, thanks to the sighax (actually boot9strap) thing.
now every firmware version is hackable with a magnet and a ds flashcard thanks to the backdoor of nintendo being discovered, and without much hackish fun left main devs moved to the switch scene
a huge banwave happened somehow in the middle of this events
and idk if there is something more to say, but nothing comes to my mind for now
