If that's the final appearance I'd say go back and do some more research as to what points need to be soldered together. There were a few previous posts here, here demonstrating a problem that looks similar to yours, but with a 40-pin. It looks like the method you tried was the like the first link. Try using the method used by Monty Kensicle and his 32-pin shown here.

Oh, I was just lazy and only uploaded one pic to show the connection, it was quite faded originally but after soldering it it looked better.

Here's a better pic of it.

So are there some of you who've had no problems with a white tabbed GBA-101 screen and a 40 pin model? I have not been able to find a brown tabbed one and I've looked through 5 of them.

Well, this will be a good experiment. Three people all with white tab "B" screens and 40-pin motherboards. I'm curious to see if maybe the type of ribbon used will make a difference. Please post the results.

If it doesn't work then know that the 32-pin motherboards start at above AU6xxxxxxxx in addition to being able to look at the printing on the mobo.

I also was planning on doing the mod but didn't really research too heavily until today. I have my GBA 001 from way back at launch, and I thought about maybe just buying another one so I didn't have to cannibalize this one with a bit of sentimental value to it.

I managed to find a seller on eBay and messaged him, luckily he had a few AGS 101 screens in stock, it arrived yesterday with a white tab (B type, if I'm catching on here). I finally got around to checking my GBA and of course it's a 40-pin. I see some appealing ribbon cable kits on eBay with glass lenses. I may wait and see what results you guys get before I attempt the mod, and I may just end up getting another GBA to do it.

It's probably tough to figure out which GBAs listed on eBay have which mobos though, and aren't in replacement cases; I don't mind the quality of the case plastic but the replacement buttons look awful to play with.

Did it ever become possible to achieve the same brightness as the maximum of the AGS 101? I kinda prefer the maximum and i wondered if anyone ever managed to make it work. Most people seemed fine to have something in between but I'd like to have the whole power. I read through the whole thread and yet it doesn't seem so, but maybe nobody just posted it?XD

Wow, according to that website it can even go brighter than the maximum setting of the AGS 101. lol but it looks highly oversaturated to me there. This is apparently the successor to the aurora mod and you can toggle the brightness by pressing Select+L in three different modes. that's kinda cool :)

I'd like to backlight mod a gba but I don't want to take my ags-101 apart, is there a 3rd party screen which can be used instead? Soldering isn't an issue

A batch of third party screens was made some years ago, it was mainly available on Alibaba and Aliexpress, but now it is out of stock almost everywhere. With luck you can find one on eBay, or maybe on a website specialized in gameboy modding, but it will be expensive (I bought mine 30$, one year ago on Aliexpress. Just now, I made a quick search on eBay, and found the screen and the ribbon cable for 100$. It is also available on Alibaba, but you have to buy at least 10 units).

Ahh ok, if it's not too much bother do you have the url?

Just a little post to give credit to wolfgangalchemist for performing this awesome mod for me - he stuffed an AGS-101 inside a DMG-001. Not just the screen - the whole darn thing. Not sure how he did it, but it works great :)

No slot modification here. I use it with an Everdrive-GB. For GBA carts I also have a modded AGB-001 :)

Nice. I was going to ask where are the shoulder buttons, but if you're using it only with GB/GBC games you obviously don't need them.

Does anyone know how I can get my hands on one of these? I'd love to have a key-combo solution to changing the brightness level, rather than using a manual switch. I'm in Canada, and it seems that they don't ship to people outside China...
I don't have any. I'm focusing on developing a new AGS-101 compatible screen. (don't ask about it R&D will take months and cost 1000s of $)

@RedColoredStars, Never heard of it. Any good?
  • RedColoredStars @ RedColoredStars:
You control a kitten. You fall out the window and have to make your way back home. Solve some light puzzles, do cat things like knock stuff over and steal things, trip people up when theyre walking, pounce on birds, complete goals/tasks etc. in the process of getting back to your home.

@SylverReZ It's short but adorable imo. Im a HUGE cat lover. Can be completed in a couple of hours if just going for the main goals. But can be stretched out a good deal by exploring and doing everything there is to do and see.

So a man goes to the doctor because his boner wont go down. As he is laying in the hospital bed, with his thing propped up in the air, a fly is flying around and landing on the tip and bothering him, so he calls in the nurse. The nurse comes in, swats at the fly but can't quite reach it, so she climbs his boner to get better aim. After a few tries of swatting and sliding back down, she says sorry I cant get it. He says keep going, a few more tries, and I can shoot the fly down.
