This is my first time posting here, and this is really my last resort, so any help would be appreciated!

...How do I even begin to explain my problem.
So, for various reasons (which I won't delve into as to not further embarass myself) I broke the ribbon cable to the top screen of my old 3DS XL and had to replace it.

Thing is, I didn't quite trust sending my console in to a stranger in another country (Eastern Europe things) so I steeled to fix it myself with the help of an ifixit guide and various Youtube videos.
Besides me ruining the ribbon cable to the camera and accidentally breaking off the little cables on the left speaker and one of the clamps that connects the speaker assembly to the screen assembly (had to literally tape it down with electric tape), the console boots up some way or another. Also, I wasn't able to mount the 3D slider correctly (it's in the right position but the 3D depth won't change), so I have no clue how to get it to work again.

Now, all is fine, I can live with only one speaker working and no camera or 3D, but here start the problems.
I wanted to play Etrian Odyssey Untold, but after the data was initialized and the Atlus logo appeared, it just gave me a black screen. Nothing, nada. No error message. Had to power off the console. Same thing happened with Pokèmon Ultra Moon and New Style Boutique (This one freezes when the title is displayed), as well as Twilight Menu (And a couple other games) Assumed it was a problem with the CIAs, so I downloaded them from a different site. Then I transferred save data from Citra to the 3DS (obviously, neither solutions have been working). Thing is, majority of the other games I've installed work fine and will boot properly.

Now, I only have to assume these games that don't work,
1. Require the cameras and/or speakers to actually function to boot properly
2. I somehow fucked up something while reassembling
3. The SD card is dying, even though it's pretty new since we bought it as a replacement for a corrupted one?

I've read that formatting the SD card / console may resolve the problem, but I sincerely want to keep it as a last resort solution in case anything else fails. I've been looking all over the Internet, but it seems no one has had my exact same problem, so...

If I remember correctly, the 3DS requires the camera to *work* in order to boot so that may be linked to your issues

Besides me ruining the ribbon cable to the camera
Top screen assembly is a nightmare to replace stuff. Old 3DS(XL) should work without camera.

breaking off the little cables on the left speaker
I had the same problem on upper LCD replacement. The magnetism of the speakers makes them do… whatever they want during trying to deal with the ton of cables. Easy to snap off one wire, but it takes a second to solder them back on.

Also, I wasn't able to mount the 3D slider correctly (it's in the right position but the 3D depth won't change)
Is the plastic slider correctly inserted so that the notch of the actual 3D slider (probably a potentiometer) gets moved? Hopefully it didn't break off. to be honest it makes sense to replace the 3D/speaker cable alongside with the upper screen, since both cables wear down and will tear at some point through normal usage.

Run a full write/read test on the empty SD with h2testw or F3 to make sure the SD is okay. Rule out SD problems and don't believe it is okay.

Other than that: my favorite method is the process of elimination. Try finding out what is not the problem to narrow possibilities down. Try
  • a different SD even if it is okay in the test.
  • playing the original cartridges of the failing games. In doubt dump them again on a different SD and verify you get the same checksum on both dumps.
  • installing and playing your dumps on a different, known good console.

I've read that formatting the SD card / console may resolve the problem,
Formatting the SD AFTER BACKING UP THE DATA is a good idea to get rid of potential file system corruption… and you should reformat (AFTER BACKUP!) for having the SD for the test mentioned above.
Formatting the console (throw away user profile) as a kind of religious sacrifice (of personal data) to the god of gaming consoles isn't a promising approach in most cases. I advise against using "Format System Memory" without good reason.

I don't think so... The console actually boots fine! See here (please note that I'm conducting the sd card test so the sd card isn't in the console atm)

Alright, so I performed two full tests with h2testw and the card itself didn't present any errors. Unfortunately I don't have access to another SD or another system, so I have no way to rule out those possibilities 😓

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
